As autumn is approaching on the Northern Hemisphere it might be a good idea to start with the autumn photo's. As Frank Fremerey wrote last year :
Autumn is now in full bloom. I took a set of wonderful images in the forest yesterday, AND: I want to see yours.
If you live heads down (**ggg**) you can fill these pages with your pictures when we are hit by spring next year and we Northerners will continue next year and so on.
(falling) Leaves and fruit in abundance, colors, Fungi, try to visualize the smell of wet earth in a forest, go out shoot in the rain, the fog, ....
An example of today
-
A great idea and a great image to kick things off :)
I simply have to re-post my sunflower as a contribution.
-
I posit yesterday's test shot with the 300/2.8 ED-IF AIS.
-
Apparently no lack of autumn colours this year.
-
Bjørn, I love your IR sunflowers!
-
Thanks John for starting this thread. Great shot. I like Jakov's art and Bjørn's IR autumn too.
In Minneapolis there are few sporadic autumn colors. To be continued... ;)
-
Thanks Anirban.
Oh, seek and find, you will succeed ;)
Great shots Bjørn and Jakov.

As seen on September 20, 2016 in Southbury, Connecticut. It still feels like summer but a few leaves are turning.
1. Japanese Maple
2. Yellow Birch
3. Virginia Creeper
-
All the forecasts are for a drab fall because of the drought, but fall will fall anyway.
D3200 and 35/2.8PC

I love that Japanese Maple, Tom. Great bokeh too.
Impressive sharpness and structure, Matthew.
-
Tom, nice backlit Japanese maple leaf which may remind you of the time you spent in Japan...

Tom-Japanese Maple-very well done!

A very different sort of autumn color, here is the dumpster in Galilee, Rhode Island, the terminus of the Block Island ferry.
Summer is really over!
-
Thanks John, Akira and Andrew for your nice comments.
Andrew, yes I used a 300 2.8. I like using telephotos for close-ups.
Here's a shot taken the other day with a 105 2.8 VR (I'm growing to like this lens) that reminds me of autumn in its own way. I don't know what kind of mushrooms these are. I look them up in my field guide but can never be 100% sure. If I taste them, I'll either lapse into a psychedelic dream, have a tasty snack or fall dead in the woods to be found sometime in the spring. What a choice!
-
Tis the season of the staghorn sumac turning red. A very good year this year for that it seems. For untold years I've been trying without success to get the quintessential fall sumac shot. There's always something wrong, wind, light, placement, depth of field, composition, you name it. Of course I don't actually know what I'm trying to get so all I can know as that this isn't it. One of the flimsy excuses for getting the 85/2.8 tilt shift lens was the thought that it might help with getting the depth of field on the sumac just right (I told you it was flimsy!). So anyway, I was out today doing something else, and I did just happen on some sumacs, and these are not the ultimate sumac shots, but at least the leaves are nice and red and the 85 is pretty sharp when I put it on a tripod.
Of course I keep taking sumac shots and will continue until I die and never get the one. It's something to look forward to.
PS the spiders on the first one are a lagniappe I did not notice until I got them on the computer.

Terrific photo. The dumpster is full of what has passed us by - seasonal summer news - which says autumn to me. Put it in the trash and move on.
-
Matthew, your red sumac story is really romantic. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
You keep on shooting sumac until you get the one :)
-
Enough for a big stew ... if they are safe to eat :-\

I wouldn't eat that, Lars ;)
Great reds and story, Matthew
The Rowan (Sorbus) has a similar leaf, but not such a beautiful red, in fact, it turns very quickly into brown....

Anirban is a class act!

Some really nice ones here. Let me follow up with a couple of my own (Nikon Df, Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AI fully open):
-
Spectacular Anirban and Kjetil
A symbol of Autumn (or Fall) here is the Firethorn or Pyracantha with the ripe berries. Instead of the Rowan berries, the birds are not fond of them, so they keep hanging ;)
-
Thank you Erik, Jakov and John for good words.
John - red berries with blue backdrop, just gorgeous.
Kjetil - dreamlike leaves are beautiful!
-
Thanks John and Anirban. You have both presented gorgeous red berries with blue backdrop lately.
I'll add another image from today in the same fashion as my last two, with some less gorgeous red berries.
-
Autumn wind.
-
The movement in the leaves are nicely caught here Lars.
I went to a cabin a bit higher in altitude this weekend. Fantastic surroundings, with all trees glazed with ice and snow. And some additional fog on the second day. Still with the 35mm fully open.

Beautiful colors Lars and creative use of shutter speed (or the lack of *speed*)... ;)

Kjetil, these images are so beautiful and atmospheric. Although it is not the autumn color anymore(!), I love them.
Anirban, very well spotted and executed! I love this color composition, too.
-
Great parking shot ;)
The IR image are so nicely done to fit the tread Kjetil!
-
Yes, beautiful Kjetil. Nice colours and overview, Anirban.
The Katsura ( Cercidiphyllum japonicum ) is always early with it's autumn colour.
-
Autumn leaves don't have to be coloured. Nikon F100, 50mm f/1.8G, Ilford FP4.
-
Thanks for the kind comments to my pictures.
Just to clarify, there is no IR image here. The picture of the icy trees are natural colours as I saw it with my own eyes. The only real difference from the actual scene is the somewhat dreamy look contributed by the 35 f/1.4 at full aperture. The sligthly orange tint of the dead grass is what I saw as autumn colours.
Very crisp picture by Anirban, lovely contrast between the colourful trees and the grey houses.
-
Anirban that red tree and its matching car, just beautiful!
Kjetil's images are about winter than autumn in our not so cold areas :) Lovely images.
The yellow leaves are just amazing by John.
All of the images here are great I am so touched by autumn every year. Something romantically sad is happening every year :)
-
Thanks Akira, John, Jakov, Kjetil.
Kjetil - your ice and snow shot is marvelous. Gives me shiver. What a scene!

Arend, these are rice bags.
Nice colours and waterdrops on your leave.
-
With the warm weather the last couple of days, I've been chasing bugs with various old lenses on extension tubes. Sometimes the bugs get away but the leaves remain, and those old lenses have a way with old leaves too....
The yellow leaves were with a 200/4 Q on long extension. A hornet was supposed to be there, but left in a hurry.
The red ones with a 135/2.8Q on a bit less extension. The fly flew. That's a Virginia creeper, I think.
e.t.a for the equipment geeks, the camera is a D3200 as usual.
-
Mike, the first image looks so pretty! It evokes my nostalgia to my hometown, too.
Daniel, thanks for sharing an interesting introduction to your tradition.
Arend, a nice find and execution!
Matthew, these are engaging closeups!

Mike, the first image looks so pretty! It evokes my nostalgia to my hometown, too.
Thanks, Akira - beautiful place!
-
It has been pretty warm, or even a bit hot in Tokyo until yesterday. Today I finally feel some autumn atmosphere...
-
Amazing shots here.
Very subtle, Akira.
Sometimes it's not the colour of the leafs which is amazing, but also the form how the leafs are affected by the Fall. I am not sure which tree this is.
-
John, thanks. The pattern on the leaf is amazing. Well seen!
-
John, that's a well spread pattern :)
-
Vey nice with the back lit light, is there a slight fill flash? Lovely pattern and shape
-
Thank you Akira, Jakov and Erik.
No fill flash was used. Had to climb partly in the tree to get the frame (with the 105mm). The leafs on the left (and right) (outside the frame) give a kind of soft reflection which made a more equal exposure possible.
-
Thanks ;) It was worth the climb!
-
The movement in the leaves are nicely caught here Lars.
Beautiful colors Lars and creative use of shutter speed (or the lack of *speed*)... ;)
Thanks Kjetil and Anirban!

I've recently commenced the second pass of files from the Norwegian 'post-celebration' trip with Erik. Once in a while one gets a true surprise when the captures are processed. This photo is an illustration to that effect. When we were in the field, lots of areas appeared not to have strong autumn colours at all, but later evidence exists to show the opposite.
The valley of Grimsdalen in the central mountain range of southern Norway has a varied topography and hence also diversified vegetation and numerous glacio-fluvial features from the last ice Age. All are potential candidates for creating interesting images in infrared.
Here is a stitched panorama from the western part of the valley, shot with a broad-spectrum Nikon D600 and the fabulous (and unfortunately, also very elusive and expensive) 200-400 mm f/4 Nikkor ED zoom lens. The diversification and range of autumn colours in the landscape is well-nigh unbelievable. But the camera never lies.

Incredible colours.
-
The Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus) is an invasive species. In the Spring and Summer it is hardly noticeable between the other greens, but in the Autumn it reveals its true character with red colours. Here it creeps over the Lilac (Syringa vulgaris).
-
John it seems to a strange muted red in the out of focus areas?
I like the composition.
-
Bjørn - for a change I like that photo :)
-
Peveril Castle from Hidden Dale.
Shot last Saturday morning. The autumn colours are starting to come out.
Not the best light, I had planned to go back on Sunday, with sun forecast, but instead I got ill :(
-
Very nice image but the very heavy framing draws all the attention out of it,,,
-
John it seems to a strange muted red in the out of focus areas?
I like the composition.
Thanks for the feedback Erik.
It is an exceptional situation, I guess.
Before the leafs of the Virgina Creeper really turn red, they are a bit pale in between red and green. It was a dark situation, with a bit of blue sky in the background. That may have caused some blue overcast which combined with the light makes the very rare and strange red.
This is another example with the out of focus leafs now in focus, very little post processing. A little bit darker than the previous one. Shot with the Nikkor 200/2 by the way.
-
The Parthenocissus in my back yard is now intensely red. Getting very windy though, plus rain is bucketing down, thus not sure I can manage to capture the magnificent colour show before all foliage is gone for the season.
-
Ahhh I see ;) Very nice although alluring back ground!
-
Very nice image but the very heavy framing draws all the attention out of it,,,
You are right.
I always put my default frame without thinking much, but something lighter would have been better. My post has been modified accordingly.
-
Less colorful autumn
-
Nice view point, Lars.
It has been quite warm in Tokyo, and we just started to see autumn colors.
-
Akira - great depiction of the status of the seasons here in Tokyo. One has to look quite hard to spot the colours. Around us here in Roppongi, many of the trees are merely losing their leaves before they colour. :o
-
Thanks, Mike!
The climate in Tokyo is really strange this year. Osmanthus bloomed twice: first time at the normal timing and second time when it became warm again. :o
-
A very muted Tokyo ;)

From the recent Norwegian trip with Erik. D500 with 105/1.4E.
-
Another from the recent Norwegian trip with Erik.
Posting a false-colour infrared image almost feels like cheating as one is virtually guaranteed a wash of "autumn" colours. This is a panorama of Atnedalen valley on the eastern part of the Rondane range ('Rondane' means 'rounded [mountains]' and it's easy to see why the range got its name).
Eight frames stitched. The small web format doesn't do any justice to all the magnificent detail of the original, though.
Nikon D600, 200-400 mm f/4 ED Nikkor AIS.

We where also blessed with amazing weather clear and no wind, perfect for long lenses and tripod work!

Spectacular colours there, John. Virginia creeper is a reliable provider of autumn colors.
-
Thanks Anirban and Mike. Yes, The Virginia Creeper gives exceptional colours. More enjoyable when the weather is good, with the sun; rain and wind can quickly end the rich colours. Forecast here is not so good now, clouds, fog and rain.
-
I almost missed the autumn colors this year, not yet developed when leaving Oslo, and leaves mostly blown away when arriving back in Fairbanks. A few fallen maple leaves saved the autumn colors for me, here a few representatives:

By the way, I tend not to care for in-your-face saturation, and I really like Akira's treatments here.
-
Thanks, Matthew.
Unfortunately my LCD monitor is fairly old and not calibrated (but the most of the images posted by others here look great without any unnatural rendition). And I always try to keep the natural look on the monitor in terms of the saturation, which may prevent my images from looking over-saturated on better monitors.
-
By the way, I tend not to care for in-your-face saturation, and I really like Akira's treatments here.
Matthew, do you mean all of the photos apart from Akira's or some of them?
I am looking at them again and I am wondering whether I have over-saturated mine?
-
Jakov, I don't think any images are "over"-saturated. I generally feel that the degree of saturation is well suited for the motives in virtually all images posted here. My somewhat subdued color just reflects the entire atmosphere of the environment at the moment of shooting.
-
Saturation can vary a lot with conditions. For instance my maple leaves were pretty much straight form the camera, with the wet surfaces responsible for high saturation together with extraordinary naturally occurring bright colors. Some images from others earlier in this thread have backlight enhancing saturation.
-
Øivind, in the images you mention, the leaves are the only compositional elements that have color. Other part (soil) is almost colorless. That also enhances the stunning natural prime colors.
-
Matthew, do you mean all of the photos apart from Akira's or some of them?
I am looking at them again and I am wondering whether I have over-saturated mine?
My comment was meant to be very general, and not directed negatively at anyone here. I picked out Akira because his last set especially seemed very agreeable.
-
Autumn colours tend to be saturated. Also some lenses give extra warm colours, like the 50/1.8G.
Neutral processing D80 50/1.8G

Beautiful colors Mike. Great composition as well.
Still a lot of greens and yellows to be found ;)
Please keep posting these beautiful colors John while they last.
autumn colors :)
That's very Jakovic autumn colors. :D Beautiful as always.
-
Forgot to post these Wingnut trees shot late October.
The tree in the second image is spectacular, Lars.
-

Thanks, Arnirban.
-
John and Lars, I like the yellow/green coordination. :)

Thanks Akira and Mike!

Time to start a winter 2016 theme. :D
Very little autumn colours are left here.
-
That a winterly autumn-sphere, Bjørn. ;)
Thanks Anirban, you show a vivid colourful scene.
Colors are rapidly disappearing here, and some predicted storms will probably make an end to all....
-

True Autumn colours here, Anirban. #1 is quite a spectacular splash of light and colour - I like it a lot.
-

That's getting the low down on autumn colours, John. Its looking chilly!
-
It's getting pretty sparse here, but there's always something hanging on for dear life.
-

Thanks John. That's a sharp image. Very nice pov.

From November 2011, Sycamore canyon in central Arizona. 16 fisheye, D3. The scene probably looks very similar right now in 2016.

I love the shot that shows the street, Anirban.
-
Great shot, Keith.
Thanks Mike and Anirban. Shot it with the Nikkor Fisheye AF 16/2.8 but cropped (and corrected) a little bit to have the desired effect.

Beautiful triptych, Fons! The third one is especially fantastic.
-
thank you Akira

Yesterday, thinking about cars or not cars in the picture:
-
Beautiful triptych, Fons! The third one is especially fantastic.
+1. Image no 3, though colourful, has an air of mystery because of the algal bloom. I really like it.
-
A quick shot from today, after the recent snow melted away.
Birna - Beautiful contrast and composition.
I love the shot that shows the street, Anirban.
Thanks Keith.
-
Rainy and cold (for Tokyo), but the color...
-
You still have gorgeous colours in Tokyo, Akira. Nice shot, pattern! What are those two trees besides Maple?
*************
End of autumn/beginning winter!
-
Great colours Akira.
That's Icy, Anirban. Nice depth !
The copper beech in the morning sun.
-
Thanks Anirban and John!
Unfortunately the maple tree is the only one I can identify... The dual-color leaves in the center give nice accents here, I think anyway.
Both of your images conveys the atmosphere nicely. I also like the way the flare works in John's image.
-
I'm visiting family in Augusta, Georgia area, where autumn is much less advanced than home in Vermont. Traveling very light, with nothing but a Canon A590 that I got at a yard sale last year for four or five bucks. But anyway, the poison ivy along the Augusta Canal is kind of pretty, even when it's a little soft.
-
Thanks John & Akira.
Autumn is over. :-\
-
Ai, too bad, Anirban.
We still have some ;)
-
An experiment in autumn colors.
D750 with a super-wide pinhole. :D
-
That's an impressive pinhole shot. A lot less dramatic than Tokyo is autumn in Georgia, where green and brown share the stage.
-
Thanks, Matthew. Your subtle finding would require no exaggeration.
-
Technically it is still autumn over here, although most of the colour fireworks and splendour have long gone.
Today: Bracken fronds with hoar frost.

With very low sun elevation, colour contrasts can get immense.
From today's shoot.
-
I am not going right 3 times Bjørn for the frozen sunset :)
-
Did I do something wrong?
-
On the contrary, it's a beautiful photo, Bjørn!
You have a certain vision of simplicity, texture and color that I admire.
-
Very formal portrait of autumn leaf from my Japanese Maple.
-
Drop shadow a little hard, but very nice rendering.
-
I'd suggest the image of the maple leaf be turned 180 degrees. This will make the drop shadows look more natural because the light source would appear from above, not from below.
-
That would send a 'signal of distress' ;D
-
The human mindset is trained to expect the direction of light coming from above. We subconsciously rely on this when we interpret the topology of a 3D structure. Turn something with shadows upside down and valleys become hills and vice versa.
-
Bjørn I agree on the shadows.
Having a flag, here the Canadian, upside down would be a 'signal of distress'
-
Well, that'll be another story. But mixing conventions conventions can lead to strange results.

Will clockwise 90 degrees work as well?

November 30

Nice colorful composition Fons.
Calender says so - naked trees everywhere around here and one has to look at the ground for colors.
-
Sometimes leaves fall all at once, thank you Lars.
-
Some more couples of leaves ;)
-
Werner that first one is really striking, simple and so detailed! Great :)

+1. A fresh, alternative view of autumn.
-
Werner, yes, so original!

Werner, yes, so original!
Oh no! :) It is a poor citation of the famous Rhein picture. Last year I visited a Gursky exhibition in Düsseldorf, where the picture was on show. I like his hidden messages, some of you can only get, when seeing his pictures in full size.

Autumn lasts till Christmas with winter solstice, december 21 this year
-
Nice, soft rendition Fons :D what lens?
In my book, autumn ends with November. This is 30th Nov so just manages to squeeze inside the season.
D500 and the AFS 105/1.4E. The lens outresolves the D500 by a wide margin and thus colour moiré is inevitable on such subjects.
-
Great one Werner.
Beautiful composition, Bjørn.
Probably the last autumn-colours of 2016....
Nikon Df - Micro Nikkor F 55/3.5

Being a long time astrologer i keep the old precession dates at heart,
the 135mm f/2 dc on the d500 is a great combination.

Still some autumn leaves...
-
A few leafs on the Planes....
-
Nice capture of the backlit leaves, John.
Here's another one. As the previous image (not trimmed), this one was also shot with 45P but slightly trimmed.
-
Thanks Akira. Tokyo has more leafs at the moment than our place. Warm colours.

Daniel that is light, delightful and beautiful :)

Not too many autumn-colours with the Indian Pokeweed. It just shrinked and collapsed....

Multiple exposure with focus shift.
A real beauty !!
