Title: Spring explosion
Post by: Olivier on April 27, 2016, 21:47:23
7 shots with my IR modified Nikon V1, at my usual place...
This is the critique section, so fire away!

Me neither.

I like how the blossom kind of mimics clouds in IR. The distortion is a bit on the heavy side though. But, that is nitpicking because this is the critique section  8) 8) 8)

It is surreal Oliver. The size magnitudes and the arrangement of the different parts withing the frame and how much space you allow for each one makes for a very personal interpretation of the sourroundings.
There are some blowout white but I couldn't care less about it. I think it gives a impressionist flare to the presentation.
Having whites and deep blacks makes easier to find and enjoy all those magnificent grey scale details.
The small man anchors the image and gives scale.
The huge space invading whites makes the magic and the lonely dry smaller one makes the contrast at different levels -in plural-

Every object subject adds to me. The "adding" effect  being closer to painting standards.

Love it Olivier, thanks for sharing

You mean seven-stitch pano?  How can I criticize an image I'm totally in love with?  No way!

Thanks everyone.

You are right Hans, the distortion bothers me as well but I don't know how to do better. It is mostly and effect of perspective. The angle of view is quite large and there has to be some kind of projection. I have used a spherical projection here. Any idea on how to improve?

Paco, thank you for the detailed review! Indeed, there are blown out whites and I could have done better. I was trying to push the contrast as much as I could and there are collateral damages...

Akira: yes, it is a combination of 7 shots (only!). It is amazing to see what decent stiching software can do with such messy images. there are so many branches and yet the final image looks OK to me with not much work done (by me).

It doesn't bother me Olivier!!!

I'm just messing with you, it's a magnificent picture.

Thank you!
I had the picture printed by a professional last week (50*50cm, 20*20 inches for the metric hindered  ;) ). I am very pleased with the result!

Many great elements in this scene.  The building for scale, and again, the man in the center for another touch of scale.  There has always been something about black and white images that marks them as timeless for me.  No distractions that can detract from an otherwise great composition.  All good.

I am so pleased for you that you have released this magnificient image from its prison in the hard drive!  It too needs to taste the spring air.  ;D

P.S.  Hope that you will print the "Three Giants" - another splendid image.

Thank you!

Dan, Hugh, Airy, thank you very much.
Hugh, I am going through my collection of (too many!) pictures taken in the vicinity of the castle and I try to come up with a very short list that I may print indeed. The three giants will make the list for sure.

Putting this image in the critique section is like a challenge , it is a superb image

The flowers in IR make the tree look like a cotton plant, quite ethereal

the clouds are a bit to bright, if this was my image I might have tried to darken them a bit

while I understand the urge to use many images when doing a pano, I think a more horizontal crop , a bit  above thee clouds is more pleasant for me

Really great work Olivier

side note: using the tiny V1 can be liberating and limitations of the little body often force me to get more creative

Thank you Armando
The problem is that I am enamored with squares...
I will play with the alternate crop that you propose.
And I agree they look like flowers, but they are just leaves, actually. That is the magic of IR!

Yes, everything gets simple when I am not overwhelmed with too many possibilities provided by the camera. It is an advantage for my kind of photography: slow process, slow moving subjects...

The man on the bench adds a nice touch.
