Daniel, cool image. Were you using a polarizer for the shot?
Fons, very nice, love the depth in the image. The distortion is well used.
Akira, now that is what I call pretty secure stowage. How the heck to they get it up and down? I like the framing of the image :) . What is it like in B&W ?
-
Thanks for the feedback Tom - no polarizer was used.
-
Tom, thanks for your comment and suggestion. A stepladder should help. :)
And this is a B&W version. Hope you like it.

Daniel, did you place the bike there and did you fish it out :)
Fons, nicely crowded bike parking!
Akira, I am certain will land the bike sooner or later :)

Akira, yup, like the B&W. Might have upped the contrast but I'm still working on B&W. Looking at these, do the walls have texture? They remind me of Hessian Wall Paper which was really 'In' during the 70's in London or the rough plaster that came in the 80's (but seems very even).
Cheers,

Thanks, Tom. Yes, the wall has some coarse sandy texture which is commonly seen here in Japan.

Saw this along side the road and had to stop.
Interesting sculptures. I think the tone mapping is too strong, because the brightened shadows and increased saturation "camouflage" the bikes.
-
Thanks...
Cooled the temp and darkened the shadows a bit.
-
Now they're really on the blue side.
I think the backgrounds, regrettably, are interfering with the visibility of the sculptures.
Seems like you'd need a very long and very fast lens to knock the background out of focus.
-
OK Thanks.
Messed with them a little more.
I think you are right about the background. It was around noon so the sun was not in my favor either.
Don't think a longer lens would work there as it was on a curve and a little valley and the road is very narrow.
Kind of sketchy even to stop in the first place.
-
One could possibly resort to either a multi-pano merge shot with dozens of shallow-focus closeups stitched together(a lot of work), or blur the background entirely in post production processing(even more work).
Or...leaving the bikes in color but mono-ing the background objects.

If the scenery looks familiar then you have seen the water sculptures named "Roskildekrukkerne" when you visited Roskilde ;-) The artist behind these impressive jars is Peter Brandes. They are 5 meters tall and together weigh around 24 tons.

Jacques this could very well be a stolen one also, dredged up many years later.

Same problem in Melbourne with dumped bicycles ending up in the Yarra river that flows by the southern side of the city CBD. >:(
The most commonly dumped machines are the rental bikes for some reason. Maybe tourists? I am not sure.

At -15 to -20°C it is not particularly slippy. But I also use studded tires on my bike, so not much of a problem as long as one pretend not to have them.

You're just teasing me now Fons!
My bike is stored outside (under a plastic cover). Recently water has started seeping in. Worse still the saddle that came with the (Boardman) bike has stitched seams across the top that's started letting water in
Result - any trip after it's been raining meant that i ended up with a damp backside :(
After looking for solutions i finally bought a replacement with no seams.

I was fortunate to attend a stop on the Motorcycle Cannonball Rally in Battle Creek, MI. The participants have to ride motorcycles the were built in 1929 or earlier. They had a 3800 mile trip planned, starting in Michigan and ending up on South Padre Island in Texas! Amazing really.
The reason I am posting the pictures here, is that I was so struck by the similarity of these early motorcycles to bicycles. This 1916 Excelsior still had pedals! In this case they were used to start the engine, after which they disengaged, but still, the evolution from bicycle to motorcycle was clear.
Brakes weren't much more than bicycle brakes either on this cycle. I asked the young rider how he could possibly stop the machine, he kind of smiled and lifted his boot to show my his primary stopping mechanism. Note all the tread worn off the front of the sole. I hope he had several pairs of boots with him to complete the trip!

Apparently, you can build a complete one out of these remnants. :o :o :o
Or maybe it was slaughtered for parts... handlebar, stem, dereilleur, chain seem to be missing.

I love that shot, Øivind. The speed of the bike, the light, the surroundings, it all adds up.

Thanks Thomas and Bent. It was captured in the blink of an eye, I did not really see it before it was past me.
The 85mm f/1.8 was not initially on my radar, but it did not take much research to realize what a nice lens it is, sometimes with almost shockingly good quality, and at a carry everyday size. I am looking forward to keep exploring the capabilities.
