Title: [Theme] this winter...
Post by: Thomas G on December 25, 2015, 19:53:37
This winter seems to be special according to the temperatures recognized.
Let's start documenting what is deviating from the usual winter as we remember and expect it.

I'll start with a Chaenomeles (Japonica) Nivalis.
These sometimes start flowering late in winter, more so in spring.
They are also flowering later then other Chaenomeles which bear orange or red blossoms.

Thomas, here's what's happening where I live in Connecticut on Christmas Day, the third full day of Winter.

The temperature was 65 degrees Fahrenheit, which I believe broke the all-time record and is about 25 degrees above normal. I went outside to document what unusual things I might see around the yard. Our small pond was ice-free and there a green frog was floating on the surface. Along our driveway, the Myrtle was in flower. The Star Moss was beautifully green.

It is as if it were April.

Thank you, Tom.
While we seen some birds around here which usually travel south at this time,
I did not recognize frogs so far.

It's about 12 centigrades today, roughly 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with very little variation over the last days.
It's very mild for the time of the year.
My expectation is that the usual swoop of cold Siberian air will reach us soon enough.

Roses are keeping leaves very long this year. And they started over flowering again.
This one lives in my garden, the image has been taken on Dec. 25th.

Beautiful one's !

Well it's very warm already, 13 degrees at the moment with Christmas. Although the Forsythia reacts quickly on higher temperatures, it did never flourish like this on Christmas.

Also here in my part of the world (Oslo), December has been the warmest on record (ie. since 1880 when regular temperature monitoring was introduced). Not entailing it's warm every day of course as it is now approx. -5C outside. But we have seen plenty of days hovering between +5 and +12C this month and no snow in the vicinity of course.

A climate change does not mean the temperature is rising everywhere - we're talking global averages here. Thus some regions can get say colder (and usually wetter) summers in combination with mild winters.

Here is a June scene from northern Norway to cool things a little off. The scene incorporates all three national colours into one: red, blue, white. Red from cryophilic algae*, blue from open water, white from ice and snow.

* these algae thrive at very low temperatures and are used as an example of what a life form on Mars might look like.

The Kerria Japonica var. Pleniflora  also flowered during Christmas.

Same situation here with Chaenomeles already in full bloom, Helleborus orientalis and Campanula flowering now instead of end of March or April and 2 Hamamelis blooming before Christmas when we've never seen them flowering before January 10. Tulips, daffodils and Arum italicum are also there already. And budding roses too.

Just to show how intricate the weather situation is, today Longyearbyen, Svalbard (81N) set a record for the warmest December ever, +8.7C, in fact warmer than most days of its summer! Today, mountain passes in Norway (about 15 deg latitude further south) closed for traffic due to bad weather (snow and wind). A coach was literally blown away off the road over one of the passes tonight.

Thanks for the identification, Mike. I first thought it escaped from captivity and was preparing to call the neighbors but, with the right name on it, I quickly found that 30 km from here, Brussels has about 5000 Ring Necked Parakeets, which are then probably expanding in the countryside.

Same thing in Paris suburban : I use to stop at my brother-in-law in North suburban when I commute between UK and South-West of France. There's a big flock of these birds acclimated there. I am sure they will stay there as there's plenty food provided in the gardens.

Here, in South England, I could see in the garden growing new small Rhubarb leave, Forsythia flowers, Blue-bells leaves, Honey suckle buds, and even some bee activity !

To bring balance to this picture of global warming in Europe, this is today's view from my girl friend's veranda. Little snow, thus not a normal scenario for the time of the year, but cold enough at -25C. The view to the forested hills in the background is restricted due to heavy frost fog on the main river running at the valley floor. The river is not yet iced over.

Lovely atmosphere.  :D
Well it seems Oslo is actually colder than Fairbanks right now only -22°C here, which is low consider the typical temperatures of -2°C to -15°C lately in spite of some clear nights. We have really gotten spoiled by the unseasonably warm weather. -25°C in Oslo with its proximity to the sea must feel really cold! Or are you at a location further inland?

Inland north of the city proper - but not by more than 40 km. However, in periods of calm weather, topography creates  cold sink holes and inversions, so gradients can be extreme.

This picture was taken today of a drain from a catch basin that captures water running off the hill above our house and channels it into our wetlands. The water flowing through the algae clinging to the lip of the pipe was illuminated with a pleasing range of colors when it caught the late afternoon sunlight. It seemed out of season on this January day.

Cold weather in winter often means the presence of the sun. As the power of the winter sun is very weak at this latitude, sunshine does little to warm the frozen photographer. However, it still is useful to create light effects around trees and branches.

Today's mid day view from the veranda of my girl friend's apartment, -20C thus not as cold as during the last night when we experienced down to -26C. Nikon Df, 105/1.8 Nikkor AIS @ f/11. The shadows are intensively cold blue as they only receive diffuse light from the sky.

OK, admittedly not this winter, but had I plucked up the courage to drive a few km to get there and ignored my current cold-induced asthma predicament, this scene is precisely what I would have observed. Even down to the thin dusting of snow. Should have been much deeper snow pack in January.

The road sees light traffic at this time of the year, so patience had to be mandatory.

I need to learn how to receive lighter shots with a more airy character.
Until then this has to be sufficient, the lens does what I want it to do.

Typical winter in the middle of norway. Mild and windy with intermittent days of cold, calm weather. I took the opportunity today, when we had a nice and calm day (-5 degrees celsius) to check for Lynx tracks. Found some old ones but no new ones. The dog tracked them for a while but found the deer and moose scents far more attractive. While the town was busy I enjoyed a nice quiet day in the hills :)

Very attractive texture in the fields of #5, the last of your first post, Børge.

I have made a preset in Nik that I use for bringing out texture in certain motives. Some time it works, sometime it dont. But I find it to work as a startingpoint in many BW conversions.

Very impressive series, Børge.  Must have been a very relaxing hike ;)  I like particularly the dog, and the shot with the train.

It is 25C here in Houston.  In South America I saw glaciers, but it was summer there.  It's all upside down.

Borge: I adore most of these shots. They provide a great feel of spatial conditions due to superb graphics and some of them feasture really great light too.

Thank you Frank! Every kind of light has its own charm. Last sunday I was asked to take some shots of rescue dogs and handlers. Black labradors and strong sunlight=not a perfect combination ::)

Børge, this is a super nice shot!

No pic, they came in too fast in the darkening light, but today the first traveling goose went through on their way back from the south.

After half a meter of fresh snow (still snowing) I settle with admiring the mountain Storsylen (1762 m) from afar. I have climbed the mountain several times both on foot and skies, but now the avalanche risk is to high. Today the sky cleared for a moment and the mountain let me take its picture.

This winter ... is not over yet.

At least not in my neck of the woods. Yesterday with the Fuji S3 Pro and 35-135 Nikkor. False-colour IR.

It aint over, until its over. That means going back and forth between seasons a few times. Nice to see were not the only ones :)

Tristin, winter is waiting for summer and vice versa ;)

Actually, the winter is always late in this area : rarely good snow (for skiing purpose) at Christmas holidays and January. February and March always better !
