my interpretation of a bloody moon
-
Another reason for me to get some PS training from you (see FB)
-
Here's a crudely processed shot I did "in my sleep" last night.
-
...and this is a real one shot 30 minutes ago. :)
Only the exposure, highlight and white were tweaked, and then the image was trimmed.
E-M5 MkII, Nikkor-Q C 200/4.0@f5.6, ISO1600, -2EV. Handheld.
-
Thanks for sharing your bloody moons guys !
-
I couldn't manage anything as dramatic as the others. Here, around midnight, the moon was a dull brown colour; I was too sleepy to stay up later.
Shot with the 400mm f5.6 AIS, cropped and enlarged.
-
Well done guys.
I hadn't planned to shoot this, but gave it a go. However they aren't as clear as yours - not enough magnification or a steady enough support.
I also really struggled to get sharp focus at the point of full eclipse as the light levels dropped so dramatically.
-
Many thanks to all those "early birds" (or late nighters) for those pictures, as I slept off the date and anyhow, I'm not sure I would have seen anything in Paris... :-)
-
Impressive sharpness, Elsa. Haven't had time to look through all my files from tonight, however in general my super-blood moon shots are not very sharp. Here is a preliminary attempt though.
(D810+ 300mm f/2.8 with TC-17e ii).
-
Lets be honest - I have seen very very few sharp blood moons. We all had the same problem - and the results show it.
My image is not the blood moon - it is the super-moon earlier in the evening - edited.
I did my tests shots - which were okey as you can see - then a friend offered to go up on the mountain with me to shoot the moon at 3:30 am. Not that this was entirely necessary - but is a girl to say no if a guy wants to take her out?? Of course not. (anyway he doesnt know better and I didnt set him right)
I felt too bad to tell him he froze his nuts off for no reason - so I made him a blood moon instead.
Oy the power of cheating :)
-
I had a clear view of the eclipse from 2:45 to 3:40, in which time the moon became completely eclipsed.
The moon's colour throughout was normal silvery white, with one or two very slightly yellow crescents.
I had never seen a lunar eclipse, so it was worth getting up in the middle of the night. But no redness. I wonder how many posted images on the web have had some colour assistance from Photoshop.
I also struggled with sharp focus, using AFS, AFC and Manual.
-
Anthony - I couldnt even get manual focus! I kept thinking I was going blind
re the internet - I think my friends are too honest :) Its only me that think everything goes!
Anyway - so many of them had bad images - they have to be real ;)
-
I thought you did a PS cheat Elsa, how else could you have a sharper moon than me? :P
Here is my early evening full moon, and eclipse version.
-
Nice thread
I tried with the V1 + 70-300 ... I saw it at about 9pm local time, redness had diminished, it was more obvious earlier, but partially visible due to clouds
nothing worth sharing , way to dark for the little V1, and was too exhausted to try with the D800

Tokyo was far from the area where you can observe the eclipse. My bloody moon was shot at around 6:00PM. For the same mechanism as sunset or sunrise, the moon was the "bloodiest" at the moonrise.

An attempt at improving my capture:

This is so reassuring! There I was, thinking it was only me!
-
Wow, Very nice !
love the mix of stars and moon
-
Here's a shot pre-blood:
-
I see some lovely and sharp bloody moons.
Since, I am hooked on multiple exposure, please allow me to add my shot :)
-
some nice images posted guys!
-
Elsa:
I had to use manual focus part of the time too. Also kept the (manual) iso down to about 800 -1250, but probably even that was too high. Perhaps mirror up would have made shots sharper, but I was too sleepy to worry about such details. Of course, there will be a new chance in just 18 years :)
Anthony:
My red blood moon has only been adjusted for white balance and put in landscape mode on CNX2 - no pp in PS or anything like that. Hence the red color is very real!
-
Tersn - I might be dead in 18 years time :)
thank the pope for photochop ;D
-
.
Yesterday morning between five and half past. Near end of eclipse.
As I was sleepy and due a thin layer of mist, I couldn't get something sharper. ???
Df+300mm AI ED. (on tripod). 1600 ISO. f/8. 1/40 sec.
The moon wasn't bloody, though...
-
No chance here, snowing and raining the whole time. So the lunar eclipse from April last year will have to do:

oy I like!

wow I love these Blood Moon shots !!! Thanks all for posting 'em !!!
We were overcast here in NJ south of NYC. I tried to persuade my SigOth to get in the car and drive a hundred miles so's we could see this, but he wasn't having any of that. oh well.
-
Elsa- Yes, in the long run we will all be dead, and in case we are still alive it may very well be raining :( .
Fortunately, there will be ordinary total eclipses of the Moon (during which the Moon is not a "Super Moon") more frequently than each 18th year :)
-
oy I like!
Thanks Elsa (and Andrea).
(Supermoon or not).
-
a not-so bloody super moon
-
I guess you must have been on the ISS to get this latest one Elsa?
I really like the overall effect - like something from a Sci Fi film.
-
Elsa, I like the fact that you saw clouds in front and behind the moon.
That must have been quite a trip!
;)
-
hahaha thanks guys - Oliver - you are sooooo sharp ;D ;D :P
-
Great topic, here's my Bloody Moon

Stunning photos everyone.
I missed it entirely. Got up at 04h00, but it had already set behind the trees (I live in a hole).
This is the following night.
-
I wasn't able to capture the rising blood moon. Too much cloud cover. It was thicker than mud to the east! I did catch this a few hours later when the moon had risen above most of the cloud cover. I only had a 200 zoom available, so this was cropped well over 1:1. Excessively sharpened in LR. :)
-
Mike - cropping the moon is a given for most of us.
Peter - I like the sharp pimpled rim on yours.
Jan Anne - that moon of yours looks alive with the glow. nice
-
TY Elsa. Gee, you mean to tell me that the other photo's posted were cropped? I was sure that they were all taken with a telescope. LOL! :P :P :P >>I just wanted to factor in the high amount of cropping that I used. Great thread. I really liked everyone's photo. TY 4 sharing!
-
Mike - of course I didnt crop hahaha
I am also enjoying the thread -
