Epson's Zoom Lens (ELPLM05) for Nikon Z???
« on: Today at 11:49:18 »
Epson's Middle Throw Zoom Lens (ELPLM05) is a high-end projection lens for large-scene digital projectors. I was given a nice sample of this lens by my friend Paul Hofseth, who wondered what it might be used for.

A quick test indicated this lens should be a feasible option for a Z mount camera, so I made a focusing mount for it using odd parts from one of my spare part bins. RAFCamera provided the required 58mm> Z mount adapter.

Technical data for the lens are as follows,

ELPLM05
Zoom Ratio: 1 – 1.53:1
Focal Length: 56.95mm – 85.5mm
F-Number: 1.83 – 2.53

The image projected  onto the sensor covers slightly beyond the DX frame. Thus I intended to use the lens on a Z fc, but see also  potential use for IR on my Z5.

Below: The lens on Zfc, and the focusing mount which allows infinity to near focus into the lens assembly (!).

A few examples from my initial test shooting. The optics render a very sharp image, but as there is no aperture, the depth of field is somewhat limited. Rendering is pleasantly 'rounded' yet with a bite to it. There is very little lateral CA, but some axial CA is present. The latter probably wouldn't matter for projection though since the image would be to a display 2-D surface.

I ave verified there is no hot spot in IR. However, today's weather being a dull overcast, any IR images would be even flatter and duller due to all the snow. So the Z5 will have to wait for a day or two when weather forecast indicates sunny conditions.
