Thanks for the link !

I would get up early to try some pics, but BBC weather says it'll be ''cloudy'' here in Hampshire, so better to stay in bed... :P

The same type of weather applies to Copenhagen, so I will stay in bed ;)
Last the blood moon was also covered in clouds  :(

Equipment has been prepared, plans made (Stellarium is your friend), and a suitable nearby site identified. However it looks uncertain with respect to cloud cover and transparency - hope it clears up sooner than predicted - never give up. At least timing in early evening is very comfortable for Alaska.

Øivind,
I'm planning to have the camera on the tracker, as the eclipse gets closer to totality the moons gets very dim, I'm not sure it's going to work but I'll try
In my neck of the woods total eclipse is closer to 11pm, also it is 70° degrees up in the sky, as much as I would like to include some foreground - say a building or a tree - the building or tree would look very big in relation to the moon

Total eclipse from my place (Geneva CH) starts at 21 January 2019, 5:42 (GMT+1] to 6:44. It’s peak is at 06:13 at azimut 278.7 and elevation 19.29.

I'm going to give it a try. The equipment is ready in the hall, warm clothes on the chair. Now hoping the weather will be clear, it's not sure yet.
If not I'll sleep within a few minutes. :D

Sounds like Birna is more sensible cautious than Bjørn!  ;D

I am all set, it's mild here, little wind, snow on the tops above ~800ft  sky is currently clear.

Just a flask to fill and I'm away.

Yes, I will definitely recommend using the tracker, Armando. The Skytracker works well for this purpose even without a specific lunar speed setting. During the lunar eclipse January last year I was able to expose at 10s f/6.3 ISO 100 on the tracker. Otherwise exposures would have to be kept at a fraction of a second and ISO pushed up. There is another thing I will try if it clears up: Last year exposure time with my AW1 was limited to less than one second exposure. However I have learned that by taping the contacts to the FT-1 adapter one can expose up to 30s in manual mode. I always thought one would get a "lens not attached message, but this is not the case in manual mode.

Really nice, Armando!

I had the gear set up but tonight we had cold rain - 8 degrees C.  The situation looked hopeless.  Just after I put the equipment away and just as totality was ending, of course the moon came out.  So all I have is an image in my mind from looking through binoculars.

Comparing Armando's and my picture, it's interesting to note the difference in illumination (left versus right) comparing Mexico and Switzerland; the more vertical inclination of the star trails, for Mexico, indicates that Mexico is closer to the equator than Switzerland .... 😊

I believe that your image is rotated 180° hence the apparent difference in lighting. But both your photos are very good.

Here is my best result from tonight's eclipse. I was surprised that this iso6400 was better than any of the lower iso shots. Probably in part the result of a less than stable tripod. But I confess that getting focus nailed was difficult - even live view.

Exellent results Armando and Lorne!
Just back and downloaded cards after being out from 6PM to 11PM. Below is how it started, and did not become a lot better; I will get back with some edits once I have gone through them all. The moon was not visible by eye through most of the total phase. Thanks to the camera and tracker I could see it, as I had the tracker set up so that by limiting myself to 300mm focal length, I could follow the moon throughout without re-aiming. (By sheer luck a hole opened up in clouds straight above when I was setting up so that I could just see enough of Polaris to polar align.) As the tracker tracks the stars and moon lags slightly behind, the moon will move slowly from right to left. I had it all planned to combine/stack a selection of these exposures, but contrast was far to poor for that. This was at 6:30 PM so the part eaten out of the moon is because of clouds, not shade of earth. However I do not complain as temperature was at a balmy -19°C by Alaska standards.  :)

Well a first edit - the effort was not wasted after all. May be some of my plans for the images can work after all.  It might take some time to complete those plans though. (A complication for further editing is that stars do not show up unless extreme edit is applied.) This is rather unexpected, considering what I was able to see with my eyes. Never give up!! I also notice when looking through the images that seeing (lack of air movement and chromatic aberrations due to atmosphere) was very good.

Great images, congratulations and thank you for making this eclipse real for me, it was not visible from Singapore (I had to look down through Earth, and saw nothing...). We were fortunate enough to see two moon eclipses in the last 18 months.
And Singapore will be ideally located to see the annular solar eclipse on Dec 26 this year! Of course I will most likely have to travel back to France to see our families precisely at that time.

Armando is your moon not upside down ?
The orientation  is as I saw it with the bright area on the top left, and this brightness moving counter clockwise
I shot this before midnight and I'm at a latitude  ~22°north  103 degrees west, the moon was seen towards NEE, at an altitude of aprox 70° in the sky

I think from other longitudes when watching after midnight the light will look inverted to what I saw... ?

Here are a few from Seattle - 47.5 N, so these will look familiar to those of us well north of Armando.  Any NG members in Chile or Argentina?  Seattle is normally grey and rainy at this time of year, but luckily we started the evening with only scattered, intermittent cloud and the air seemed quite clear.  It did begin to get a little foggy towards the end - camera, lens and tripod were dripping wet from condensation by the time I disassembled everything.  The first two are with the 500 mm f/4 P on a D810 (at ISO 200, 1/8, f/8 and ISO 800, 1/2, f/5.6 respectively).  For the third and fourth I added the TC-301 to make it 1000 mm, which worked very nicely (both at ISO 64, 1/15, f/16 - i.e. closed down two stops plus the two lost to the TC).  This set-up is far too heavy for my little star-tracker, and I notice that bright stars trail diagonally across about 5 pixels in the 1/2-second shots.  All are cropped a bit, processed for CA and contrast, and lightly sharpened.
Cheers,   John

Lots of brilliant pictures from this event! The biggest event her at 63,44 north and 11,04 east, was the fact that we had clear skies for the first time in a month. I managed to fire off a few rounds before high clouds obscured the latter portion of the eclipse. But it didn't matter much since my fingers started to get numb in the cold :) The last time I had clear skies on such an event I remember I used Provia slide film. Today my m43 gear made the task much easier.

Well I finally caught up, this is my series of images of the Blood Moon.

This is a nice or crappy photo, depending on your opinion!  I took this just as the eclipse beginning.

This a series of the build up to the full eclipse, D800 with Nikkor ai 300mm f/2.8 at 2.8 ISO 3200, I now realise I was really too high with the ISO which has resulted in rather noisy images.

This composite is after the eclipse, each exposure was at three minute intervals.

This is with the exposure adjusted for the bright parts of the moon.

After the eclipse I took some landscapes by moonlight, which was diffused by cloud which swept in almost unnoticed as the eclipse finished.

Thank you Frank, it's an enchanting place, I love it up there.  The lighting was surreal, it was an opportunity not to be missed, The D800 and the little 16mm f/2.8 fisheye are a good combination.  I am fortunate to live so close to such places, I just wish I had the skills to produce the goods more consistently.

The last one is my favorite among the landscape captures.

Look for an exposure at 04:41:43 UTC when there was a meteor strike on the moon recorded by many photographers - details at spaceweather.com.

If my calculations are right this rather blurry and noisy 1 minute exposure (too long tracking without lunar rate, and something might have slipped) happened to span the time of the meteor strike (camera clock lagged by 33 seconds, I am at UTC-9) , but none to be seen. It should have been at about 8 o'clock near the rim, resolution and contrast too poor with attenuation by the clouds:

There are some gorgeous images in this thread and some of you were lucky to have had really clear skies. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the different versions.

We had had heavy freezing rain all day followed by heavy clouds which suddenly cleared just before the Eclipse began but temperatures were truly frigid and even with gloves my fingers became totally numb after just a few minutes

High altitude clouds must have returned because it was very hard to see the moon at total eclipse when it became very dim and hard to see let alone focus upon.

Sorry Øivind, have been rather busy with other projects...

I have checked my images and I do have one very close to the time you mention, I think there may be a tiny plume at about 8 O'clock within seconds of that time.  I haven't been able to look into it further today.  I will try to follow it up tomorrow. The image is rather dark in that area but there is a distinct bright pixel about two pixels from the general line of the moon's edge, which is admittedly a bit uneven!

Joining a little late after a period of silence... nevertheless, please enjoy the lunar eclipse from my picturesque hometown.

Really excellent photo - the show was closer to your horizon than here in the US.

Thank you all for the kind words! Yes, we were fortunate enough to have the spectacle at lower angles. Almost missed it because of the really bad weather forecast, but in the end it added to the atmosphere.

Thank you, Ann. I highly value the words of seasoned photographers. Indeed, I think everybody should pay a visit to Budapest at least once in a lifetime.
