There is more between Earth and sky than most other places
« on: January 16, 2021, 14:15:29 »
I was reminded of this (rather sloppy) saying many moons ago, when I browsed through the images I had taken during a Solar Eclipse. In Oslo, my location at the time, the Eclipse was not total, "only" 95% or so. Still plenty  near the "real thing" to incite a lot of enthusiasm in photographer's circles, and I admit being tempted to join the throng myself. So that is what I did. After researching the best shooting vantage points, I decided on putting myself adjacent to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, a landmark in the Oslo region, which besides being a nice place for sports (if you are interested in suchlike wintery activities, which I'm not), provided a full sky view for the morning sun.

This is the entire sequence I did that morning (D1X, a cheap & tiny Itorex 300mm f/5.6 mirror lens, TC-201, R72 filter).

It is evident that something out of the ordinary was captured near the apex of the Eclipse.

I did experiment a lot pulling out the details of those files taken a few seconds apart. The images shown below are reprocessed to get rid of the rather noisy appearance of the originals, but otherwise they are similar to what I posted back then on a Norwegian photo site. This image incidently won me a photo competition by a major Norwegian newspaper, so earned me good money as well.

The rather down-to-Earth explanation of what we see on these photos: just internal reflections in the optics of the mirror lens, amplified by the TC added.

Simple explanations are usually to be preferred, ref. Occam's Razor.

Which of the final versions do you pref? My personal nod goes to the red "man in the moon".

The one with the internal optical reflection has been very familiar to me since I had seen it on your classic website.  The opening composite image looks very much like the eyesight test chart commonly used in Japan.

Most will associate the sun with red. But I would hesitate between the two. Nice shot !

What an impressive, unique and magical shot.

I´ll be hard press to choose a color. I do like better the image filling more the frame in the red version and the more pronounced "eye and mouth".

Paco is on to The right version, use the green version (channel) and switch the green color to red.
