A good assessment of this lens. The AIS 105/2.5, 135/3.5 and 135/2.8 all look very similar. They all have have an identical shape from the aperture ring up to the focus ring (apart from the different aperture and focus scales). It is only from the slide-out hood upwards that the lenses appear different - the 105 is shorter, the 135/3.5 has a hood the same diameter as the 105 but is overall longer, the 135/2.8 has a wider diameter to accommodate the faster aperture and is overall a little longer too.

I wouldn't be surprised of the focus ring of the 135 f/3.5 and f/2.8 are the same part since the focal length, focus scale and focus throw are the same on the two lenses. I think with the AI-S line Nikon tried to standardise parts and construction much more than previous versions.

I prefer the AI 135/3.5 over the AIS, the focus throw is longer, the hood is a little deeper and is less wobbly when extended.

Is there a big difference in the IQ of the AIS with the older 4/4 versions? I am asking because a 135mm f3.5 AIS in excellent condition is up for sale for a very reasonable price in a local shop but I already have a 135mm f3.5 K version.
Keep shooting,

I had the K 135/3.5 for a short time and thought it performed well. The background rendition was very smooth, and the lens has curved aperture blades so the de-focused blurs are nicely rounded. In terms of performance it was like a longer, slower version of the 105/2.5.
I now use the AI 135/3.5 as it is smaller, lighter and has a built-in hood. It is sharp but the bokeh is not quite as nice as the older version. I never compared them side by side so couldn't say which is sharper. If the AIS lens is a good price, why not try it out and run some comparisons yourself?

The K (New Nikkor) 135/3.5 is the old 4/4 design, taken from the Nikkor-Q.C 135/3.5. The AI and AIS use a 4/4 design which is more compact. Given it is different I would expect the IQ to be different too :) :o
