Obviously, if one starts with a stellar lens, even a degraded image could well be highly acceptable.

Well, I get mine tomorrow.

The lens stats of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II (on http://www.lenscore.org) blow away conventional macro lenses.

I am just curious how much a person could "fill the frame" 7-10' away, of a standard butterfly.

I guess I will find out soon :)

Thanks,

Jack

PS: Also do reptiles and such, so I am quite confident it will excel there.

I understood your post that you will get the VR II tomorrow - correct?
If yes, congrats to you for your new lens! I think you will like it ;)

Not a reptile, but approx 10-15 ft away. VR II, handheld. D800

Out of the 300mm/2.8 optical designs / variants, the 300mm/2.8 VR II is imho the current "sweetspot" in the 300mm/2.8 range.

You might find the lens initially large, but over time this impression most likely will go away .... :)

rgds,
Andy
