I like this guy can't understand what he is saying and lost me after the third screw.
I would have to video tape myself dismantling my D200 so I could put it back together.

Actually the D200 is fairly easy to open and work on, especially compared to many later cameras,,,

And a capable performer if you don't need high resolution, the benefit of not having the aa filter is increased sharpness for many lenses in IR

The D100 is probably not a good starting point. However, D200, D300, or of the bigger brothers D2H or D2X all could be candidates for IR conversion.

If considering buy a camera for IR conversion the D300s has a conveniently located Live View button on the back of the camera while Live View is a bit fiddly on the D300 as it's selected on the Release Mode Dial.

Thanks for the info, Dave. LiveView is definitively an advantage for IR work, in particular using lenses with a massive IR focus shift. Unfortunately, the latter situation is quite common.

The flex-cables in D300/D300s are a pain to re-seat in their connectors and there are a spiders-web of them, so take care when working on them.

I used to shoot D3 with D2Xs and D200 [IR] on the side on the NikonGear Safari in 2009,,, D3, D2Xs sold long ago,,,D200 still clicking away, last year I cleaned the rear display on the inside, it had hazed up a bit internally, now good as new.

Richard,

Neither the D2Xs nor the D200 have Live View if that's important to you.

You will probably find manual focus with the D2 series easier than the D300 series. I could use a 1.2 eyepiece on my D2H but can't on the D300s. I shoot through glasses. I can't see the in camera data the 1.2x eyepiece on the D300/D300s.
