Thank you for these, Richard.

If one is doing an Ai modification to the aperture ring as fitted to the very early Nikkors, do be aware that these rings were screwed onto the back of the lenses with a fine pitched thread.

This would be the first series Nikkor-Q 135/2.8 with serial numbers 135001 - 144627. This one has no screws in the mount.

The second series with serial numbers 163011 - 178118 has 5 screws in the mount, but no official AI kit. I'm not sure if this has a screw-on aperture ring - I thought lenses with screws in the mount had slip-on aperture rings? Rick?

The third series has serial number 189311 - 367229. This one has AI kit 44 and definitely does not have a screw-on aperture ring. Nikon never made AI kits for screw-on aperture rings.
The pointed prong changed to rounded within this range, around no.237xxx, so is not a good indicator of the screw-on aperture ring.

I am not sure about this, I had 3 of these at one point for scrap and I swear the aperture ring looked the same :o :o :o
there may be some tolerance differences,tho...

The third series and later Ai rings has two screws that holds the the aperture mechanism on the inside, you can see one around the 3M mark if the lens is at infinity. The first and second has a different design for that mechanism.
