Most of you who came to Scotland 2016 met our lovely golden labrador, Sally. I'm sorry to say that we have just discovered that Sally has widespread - and therefore inoperable - cancer, and probably only has a few months left.

It is foolish to become too attached to pet animals, they are so short-lived, but Mayumi and I are both stricken by this news.

Dave I know what it is to lose a family canine member to the dreaded "C" so I sympathise with you and Mayumi!

P.S. It is most definitely not foolish to love a pet, they become very dear family members!

Oh, that is awful news, Dave. She was your shadow during the Scotland week, and I cannot imagine you heading out on your photography trips without her.

I feel for you and Mayumi - make the most of the next few months.

Mike.

Dave, it's not foolish at all.  I'd like to share the sorrow with you and Mayumi-san.

David, very sad news indeed.  It is almost as hard to watch a companion animal die of terminal disease as it is a person - at least it has been that way for myself.  May you and your wife continue to enjoy her company for as long as you have her.

Sally is a very dear dog. I'm happy that I could make her acquaintance while in Scotland. Becoming attached to our pets is something which makes us good humans. The love that you and Mayumi and Sally share will not go away just because Sally will soon step out of her earthly dog suit into a more ethereal form somewhere else in the universe. You and she will still feel it.

Something happened today which has helped us both to feel somewhat better - the postman brought an enormous parcel which turned out to contain a beautiful print, luxuriously framed, of Erik's 220deg-fisheye shot of our house and garden. The sender was Thomas (Stellwag); we are delighted with the print and deeply grateful to Thomas and anyone else who might have been involved.

For me, this is what NG get-togethers - like Scotland 2016, Lofoten, and my meets in Tokyo with Mike Selby and Akira - are all about. I don't mean getting presents, nice though that is, and I don't even mean photography (which is the catalyst) - I mean friendship. And of course this applies equally to all the other get-togethers, like Maastricht, which I wasn't able to attend.

So thank you, Thomas, my friend.
