the 1.5x crop portion of your d810 is a bit over 15MP - so compared to the 21MP of the d500 in that same "area" of the sensor, no, there's not much difference in "reach."

so really it comes down to 10FPS and the AF improvements. if you find yourself missing moments in between frames, or having out of focus shots, then it might be worth it ;)
Yes thats the point. I am using a D800E configured to quickly switch between FX and DX. The advantage, i can get full frame if situation is allowing it and increased range and speed when needed, plus I can see in the viewfinder what is around the DX frame - sometimes this is advantageous to anticipate and get tight framed shots. The downside: it is still slow in terms of fps and buffer size, then the D4S has its merits again. The only DX-way to get in this range is now promised by the D500. Will see how this will change habits again.

No, you are allowed to ask so the D500 can answer an affirmative 'yes'. It remembers.
Bjorn: I wonder if you could clarify your response to tommiejeep (reply #83 directly above your post that is quote here) in response to your comment that you saw a TV demonstration of the D500 in-camera AF Fine Tune function? Tommiejeep had asked you in post #83 if the AF fine tune settings could be saved for more than one focal length of a zoom lens? As I understood, your response to him indicated that the AF Fine Tune setting for a zoom lens would be saved for when that lens would be re-mounted. However, I wonder if the demonstration you saw also showed that one zoom lens at different focal lengths could be fine tuned and saved for a few different focal lengths, e.g, long end, middle and wide. I ask all of this because there was a post from a day or two ago at DPreview from someone who attended the CES show just recently in Las Vegas, NV where he asked a Nikon rep if AF fine tune at different focal lengths for a zoom was possible and the response from the Nikon rep was "no." However, the person who had asked that question also indicated that one other Nikon rep there didn't even know anything about the whole AF fine tune feature, suggesting that NikonUSA's booth personnel really don't know much about their products which is not surprising.

Thanks in advance for any clarification you can offer. This is my first post here after joining yesterday. This forum is terrific. I hope the fact that my preference is red versus white wine will not cause me to serve time in some NG purgatory. Best Regards, Jim

Some more high ISO screen shots here, also with more realistic ISOs including zoomed in views:

What I was saying is, I would like to see a jpeg straight out of the camera at 12.800 ISO :)
If it's anything close to the D4/Df I will consider getting one too!

Frankly to expect good quality @ 12,800 ISO is asking a little too much for a DX sensor even with current technology IMO, and one couldn't expect it to even come close to a FX- D4s/D4, or even a D3.
The ISO comparison to make @ the moment is the DX- D7200 which I had and sold recently and found for me the limit I was happy to stretch the ISO was 1600/2000 tops.
So IF the D500 can push that 1 to 1 1/2  stops to ISO3200/4000 I'd be pretty happy.

Cheers
Marc

I don't need a new camera, but....
For me it ticks all the boxes I am interested in
Killer AF
High FPS
Movie
The only question mark that remains is, will it be better than my D700 in the region of iso 6400?
I am eagerly waiting for the reviews :)

Jim, good to see you here  :)  I think we are going to have to wait for Bjørn to get is D500 for proper testing  :( .  So far most of the "Hands On" reviews are literally that.  Most of the ones that actually shot the camera were not interested in fine tuning, and particularly, not long lenses.  Is strange that not many even mention it  :( .  I can find nothing from Nikon explaining how it works.  May take a while,  Bjørn was still finding things with the Df after his initial assessment.   Hopefully we'll get the full story before your trip and before I have the money to buy it  :)  The only reason I can think of why Nikon has not made it a selling point is that they do not want to admit that some of their bodies need fine tuning with some expensive lenses... lol ... as if was a trade secret  ;)
Cheers,

Betting against that assumption will give very poor odds ...

I have very limited experience compared to most people here.

But all the Nikons I have used over the years (D100, D80, D7000 and D750) look fairly similar at maximum native ISO.

If the D500 (and D5) follow this trend, they must have made some serious strides in sensor technology, but I guess one can live in hope?

Apparently HOPE is a poor business model. But don't let me stop you from dreaming :)

That means my wallet might take a hit.
D500 + Tamron 17-50 +80-200 af-s for sportshall shooting should cover most bases.
Let the waiting game for reviews start :)

I have been invited to a session with Nikon tomorrow where the new babies will be presented.
Are there still any questions you'd like me to try and find out more about?
