My mind went immediately to the Edgar Allan Poe story "A Decent into the Maelstrom". The light draws you in the pic.

A nickel-plated roundwound electric bass string, and the rough recreation of its shooting setup sans camera.  The lens is the reversed spigot-mount Canon C-8 38mm f1.8 for 8mm cinema camera.

Jakov, believe or not, it is!  I was just fascinated by the way it looks from such a proximity.  :D  The posted image is an approx. 1/10 of the original FX frame, by the way.

The rig is very, very versatile.

The surface of a flatwound electric bass string.  Zuiko MC Macro 38/3.5 with a couple of appropriate adapters, 2 x PN-11, a set of makeshift LED lighting and D750.  I used an IR remote controller in the mirror-up mode, but the shutter shock was difficult to handle at this magnification (roughly x4 on the sensor).  Tons of iridescence can be seen here.
