Kamakura 1 of 2

I was initially confused Chip

Is this a Raven (or other Corvid family)
And the location is Kamakura?

Colin - you and me both!  To my eyes, the Japanese crows I encountered look different than the ones I see in the States.  Larger and more curved beak and different head shape.  I thought they were ravens when I first saw them.  Location Kamakura - coastal Japan south from Tokyo.

It's a lovely shot of the heron Lars
Caught unawares

Many thanks, Colin - yes, I've added some flexible longer focal length to my camera and can now get closer without getting too close ;D

Good going
I envy you your 600mm f5.6 Arturo
But not having to hand hold it!
Pretty good results given this!

Thanks Colin, this is photographic hunting. Sometimes my wife takes photos of me to remember the moment; these were taken with the Nikon D70.

.... 600mm f5.6

..this is photographic hunting.

Actually the weight of this is almost secondary to having to manually focus a 600mm lens to capture a Bird in Flight.
I'm guessing the D70 may not have as good a screen for MF as some of the film predecessors too!
Much respect

European winter is maybe cauusing photographers (but not many of the birds) to keep warm inside

Arturo, Paco and maybe Nasos live in warmer parts of the continent and Artuto posted a lovely Sparrow image in the February daily blog
As Hugh says, the small birds often get less attention
A nice portrait of a common subject.  Small birds are hard to get right I think - move too dammed fast and their size works against getting big images.

I wonder if a few of us never knew that some birds have thin, maybe tube-like feathers around their heads. Clear in the Sparrow shot.
Many years ago, I found similar things with a Finch

The image above was taken with a D300 TC14 and 300mm AFS
So 1.5 x 1.4 x 300 effective focal length

Taken in an April when there was snow on the ground and the Finch let me get around 3m away
