Testing the new baby - Zf & Voigt 40mm 1.2 @ f2.0
Never thought I’d want another baby, but I’d take this one. Lovely lens, lovely images.

I think I've found my lonely island lens & camera combo
Zf & Voigtländer 40mm f1.2 @ f8.0; 1/8" handheld; ISO 180

The results are lovely. What makes you prefer it to the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8S?

(I don't need one, I don't need one, I don't need one...... ;D)

Of course you need one. As far as I am concerned, 40mm always felt natural - in fact, 20, 40, and 58mm (quasi 60) all do, more than the usual 28 (or 35), 50, 85.

One reason I did not buy that one is, the Z40/2 is sweet (so is the Voigtländer 40/2 and its close-up complement).

The other reason is, when I went to buy it, it was out of stock while the 50/1.0 was there and is darn good, even wide open. After testing it for 1/2h I could not part with it.

I may get back and add the 40/1.2 to my inventory, but there is some redundancy - the 50/1.0 is equally a well-built MF lens, just a bit longer and bigger. Another redundancy is with the 50/1.2 Nikkors, dreamy wide open, very sharp from 2.0, while the 50/1.0 is more consistent with its high contrast through the whole range, remindful of the Noct Nikkor.

But coming back to your case: if you have no 40mm, resistance is futile. Surrender while stocks last!

Many thanks Tim and Ian,

I concur with Airy that 40mm feels natural. And this particular 40mm just feels right on the Zf with its aperture ring and it produces vintage like photos wide open but can be very sharp closed down. I also own the Z 40mm f/2.0 but never use it.
I really like the Neo Noct 58mm f/1.4 but with the FTZ II it makes for a front heavy experience. Still that's about the only F mount lens I'm going to keep.
I wouldn't like to swap the Z 35mm f/1.8 for the Voigt 40mm f/1.2 as it is very good and serves me well for fast paced event coverage.
But for a trip and when you have a bit of time the Voigtländer is a lot of fun to use. Zf with Voigt 40mm and Voigt 15mm makes for a very compact full frame travel kit.

I did not opt for the Vogt 15, but instead ordered the humble Viltrox 20/2.8 for my "travel kit". We'll see.
