Thanks, Ric.

A really good workhorse type lens with excellent resolution.  I debated selling it but I was getting rid of all my DX Nikons and couldn't justify keeping this lens to use on FX with a crop.

Your article mirrors my experience with DX format Nikons.  I decided the only APS-C cameras I will continue to use are the Fuji X-Pro and X100 models (and, occasionally, the Ricoh GR series).  Their unique designs and handling make them appealing to me so I can justify keeping them along with all my FX Nikons.

This is a very good lens but it's hard for me to justify it because I rarely shoot DX. ::)

This is the only review that you will find anywhere that shows how it performs with film :o :o :o

I've put it on my revived D1X :) A visually nice combination and delivered files are great as well (all things including vintage considered).

Yes, but it's too big :o :o :o

This lens defeats the purpose of DX ::)

The rendering is stunning though...

One can argue the D1X is too big -- and heavy -- as well :) They complement each other and balance well to give excellent handling. Just went out with this very combination today and got nice results. The colour acuracy is quite something.

I might continue to use the 17-55 on my D500 if I keep that camera. Not  decided yet. No haste.

To be fair, the original purpose of DX was that larger sensors were prohibitively expensive. Its ability to allow smaller cameras and lenses became a selling point later.

Even DX cameras and their lenses grew larger over time .... Then, with mirrorless, the small size again became a selling point. Until theses systems grew in size, too.

Currently, I have no justification for a DX system. ::)

I only use it for birds and bugs...

m4/3 is much better for perverts at the beach :o :o :o

In contrast, I  see a lot of use for DX systems, and that is justification enough for me. The Z fc hasn't been dumbed down too much by Nikon so is pleasant to use and fits my smallish hands like a glove too. I even use the Z30 which is dumber, but still useable. With suitable lenses to match these small cameras, they are easy to deploy whenever a bigger system would be a hassle.  And I don't reserve DX for 'birds and bugs', either.

The above relates to Z/DX, since I seldomly use F-based systems these days.

Still have this lens from early days (for me) with D70, my entry, and later my extravagant D300 nearly-pro camera. Took many a portrait of my daughter!

Lately I’ve been enjoying Ricoh GX3 for DX, impossibly small DX camera. I wish Nikon would make a comparable one!!
