reviving old memories - my late father telling how to use a calliper. Since then (60 years have passed) I even forgot the name "Vernier", the military engineer who invented that in 1631.
I have just had to reacquaint myself with the scale as the battery in my $20 Aldi digital caliper has expired! What an incredibly useful invention Monsieur Vernier came up with.
