Hi all, first post.

I've been shooting for 4 years or so now, and I'm always looking for new avenues to get feedback on my work.  I recently found this forum and wanted to put up some of my favorite pieces to see what the community thinks.

Here's the first - let me know what you think.

Hi, Justin !

The first thing I can state, is that your image is very dark (at least for my taste... :)).

The histogram will confirm.

Perhaps you tried a special effect and you made it on purpose ?

good first pic
1. I would have waited a second for the bike to me in front of the white wall - then the subject wouldnt have disappeared so much in the image
2. I would also straighten the buildings :)

Rosko - it is very dark.  I liked the image slightly underexposed better than with a proper exposure for some reason.  Just a matter of preference for this image I suppose.

Elsa - For this particular image, I was trying to shoot a somewhat symmetrical shot, so I wanted him in the center of the frame.  I did go back and check the file, and a simple lens profile correction in Lightroom has straightened out the lines on the building.

Of course we all have our own ideas of what we want when we shoot - as it should be. However - sometimes one sees a different perspective when someone comments. Remember your image is posted in the crit section - so its a free for all to comment.
LR or PS only corrects up to a point. the buildings are skew. You might like it - which is fine (some others here also don't mind skew buildings) but for me I like finishing an image off.

I didn't intend to imply that I didn't appreciate the critiques.  I just wanted to offer up my intentions with the shot regarding the exposure, not to be defensive.

Here's the shot after profile corrections. I agree that the lines needed to be fixed and look better this way.

Actually, I still think I see a bit of skew.  Maybe I need to get my eyes checked. :P

As others said already, it's a bit underexposed, but if you like it that way, then it's supposed to be like that :)

We welcome all newcomers.

As a general rule, images processed for showing on the web might be different from files intended for printing. Underexposing deliberately is not a good idea for web images as they are easily influenced by all the surrounding light contamination of text areas. This is the reason that many photo web sites provide black or other dark backgrounds. Images display better but any text is massacred. So the current theme here on NG is a middle ground.

By the way, "underexposure" had more meaning in the film period than now when digital prevails.

Your image has a lot of potential. It does need some perspective correction. I love Black & White photography, and agree this may print better than what is shown on screen. I see a fine image here by cropping both left and right. Keep in mind as a die hard square format fan I'm a bit biased. By cropping to square you can keep your subject more or less centered and you get some very contrasting and interesting lines from the highlights.

Your monitor might be too bright for editing.

This is the most probable cause of darkish edits.

Otherwise I like the shot: Calm detailed and not agitated.

I like the original image as a formal-style, architectural elevation in photographic form. 
I immediately noticed that the tones were unnecessarily compressed down to the darker end of the scale...it'd be better if it was at least a bit brighter.
What has been here called "skew",  I call 'keystoning'...the camera is slightly tilted up.
I didn't even notice the tilt until the others pointed it out!
What I did notice is the barrel distortion, which, while slight, really shows up when it plays over a shot of a subject like this.
Personally, I'd like to see the distortion gotten rid of, but don't mind the tilt at all.
