Z6 ISO query

Dear all,
A quick query regarding ISO setting for the good results? Is is ok to use ISO100 as the low point or would it be better to use ISO200? I’ve always thought that lower was better, now I’m not so sure!

Digital cameras tend to have their best performance overall at base ISO setting. Which for the Z6 is ISO 100. Unlike film, lowering the ISO will not entail better quality. You might get slightly improved noise behaviour, but lose out on dynamic range and colour fidelity.

Personally I use my Z6 more often at ISO 200-800 or even 1600 than at ISO 100. A theoretical improvement in image quality easily can be offset by shaky captures due to long exposure times

I mostly use 100 iso setting when there is enough light.
Lower iso when I want some effect with a long exposure like running water.
I don't use automatic iso as I prefer keep the control of sensitivity.

I use 100 if conditions permit, but frequently use auto ISO as I shoot handheld in dim environments. Depending on subject, up to 16000 is usable. I’ve been using the meter setting “preserve highlights” which tends to shift the exposure towards lower ISO to keep highlights within range. It works pretty well, but sometimes will need pulling up the shadows a bit. In contrast to Rosco I care more about depth of field and ability to minimize camera shake/subject movement than I do about sensitivity.

Try it out and decide for yourself. The Z6 has lots of latitude to play with.

Thank you all, I too use Auto ISO, which always seems to want to go to ISO100, so I’m satisfied in using ISO100 especially when not using a fixed ISO!

ISO 100 definitely preferable.  The Z6 does retain color mucb better at higher ISOs than previous cameras like the D750, but it also has some patterning to it.
