AFS 35 1.8G (FX) for portrait?

I’ve read that some find it’s bokeh a bit «nervous».....

Would like to use it for environmental portraits, often wide open (like to separate from the background), but I’m getting second thoughts due to the «bad» bokeh.

Of course, if I had the money I’d get the 35 1.4 😊.

Any advice/experience regarding the AFS 35 1.8G?

Distance from subject to background, and the properties of the background, largely determine what you get with a wide-angle lens. Too close a background can thwart the bokeh even of highly acclaimed 'cream machines'.

Move around a little to scout the optimum position once you arrive at the location.

Nice picture and «good enough» bokeh for my use :-).

I’ve been looking at 35 1.8G group at Flickr, looks like, as Birna suggested, if one know how to take advantage of the environment, one CAN achieve nice bokeh.

Note there are two 35 1.8G lenses, one is DX the other FX. They have completely different optics and would have different bokeh, so when discussing this lens take care to know which you are referring to
