Accessing Title and Caption metadata from the image EXIF?

Having copied numerous slides created by my father I have been dutifully entering the botanic names and location/date info into the Lightroom metadata input section.

Does anyone know what applications can access this metadata making it usable for titling and captioning the images in a publication.  Most of my work is in In-Design 6 but I am expecting I will have to update to In-Design CC eventually, to retain compatibility with Lightroom CC.

Is In-Design CC able to utilise the metadata which I am creating?

Metadata can be stored in xmp 'sidecars' so should be retrievable later from other software.

I prefer to keep the data in a separate data base though, as this allows much more flexibility in searching and indexing.

OK, thanks Birna, how do you link the image and the database?  I tried a database approach and embedded the image in the db but the quality suffered because it would only take small JPEGS.  That's one reason why I use Lightroom, searching on images is easy using GPS.

You could simply store a pointer to the image file .... (I make the pointer itself relocatable thus the file archive(s) can be moved around when storage requirements require so).

Thank you, that's a really helpful idea, it puts me a step nearer my goal.

I tried to do this a few years back but deleted the db because it was impracticable as I had created it.

Thanks to the D800 fitting the PB4, I will have many more images to catalogue.
