I use the better beamer in a variety of ways, depending on my needs. I am often on the water before dawn, and sometimes do have to use it as my main light source. After it starts to lighten a bit, it is more to give a bit of fill, and yes to creating a catchlight at times.
I have to say that with the better high ISO performance of the newer generation of cameras, I don't have to use it as much as in the past.
