1 Nikkor Lens Recommendations

I recently picked up a Nikon 1V1. No lens, however. My D2xs that I purchased a year ago has given me a fatal shutter error. So...moving on to a smaller more portable system. I know the 1 system is likely no longer supported (per a few articles I perused) but I bought one anyway. I figure the 18.5 is a given for lower light applications. How about the 10-100? Any good? Better to have the "kit" lens duo in the 10-30 and 30-110? If I can get away with two lenses....all the better. That would seem to cover most any photographic opportunity. I have read a lot of bad reviews on this system but wanted to try for myself. Not much invested in the camera so why not give it a try. I liked the D2xs but rarely took it with me. Whatever printing I do, it will not exceed 8X10.

I have the v1, it is very nice as long as you stay up to iso 400, 800 works ok in b&w
The18.5 f1.8 is very nice, sharp, low distortion , low CA
10mm f2.8, only ok in comparison to the above, but very small
and 10-30, I have not used it for a long time, the aperture limts the speed specially combined with an iso up to 400, the vr it has is not good at all, I do not recommend it

I also have the FT1 adapter and I use many of my f mount lenses with this combination, it takes patience but it is fun, amazin reach and good quality when combined with the consumer fx 70-300 vr zoom

Since you dont have any lens the 18.5 would be my recommendation

Thanks Armando. What about the FT-1? I have a Nikkor 35mm F2 Ai, Nikkor 18-70 AF-S and a 75-150 Ai F3.5 Series E. Can these lenses be used effectively with the FT-1? As far as ISO, the D2xs was not particularly great beyond 400 but I got some great printed pictures as high as 800-1200 with that camera. Again...I am not printing anything beyond 8X10. Mostly smaller for albums.

I have succesfully used some AI and AI converted lenses
35mm f2.8 ai converted
55mm f1.2 ai converted
105 f2.5 ai

the lenses do not have a cpu so the exif will not show any lens,but it is fun to do if you have the patience

I second that the 18,5mm f/1.8 and the ft-1 for adapting nikkors and f-mount lenses.

For the wide end the 6.7-13 is a very good contender (18-35 on FX).

I think I will start with the 18.5mm though they appear to be sold out or no longer in stock everywhere until April 2018. The FT-1 Adaptor is quite expensive and after further reading, it seems the Nikkor lenses I currently own will not be particularly good in that application. Not wanting to give up the lenses I have, I went searching for another D2x(s) but all are much more expensive than what I originally got mine for.

Picked up a D2h on craigslist today for $85. That way, I will continue to use the three Nikkors I have. Very similar to the D2x though less resolution. Playing with it this AM. Great daylight camera. It will hold me over until I can purchase the 18.5mm for the V1.

besides the v1 body which I got at a deep discount everything else I got it new and yes the FT-1 is rather expensive, specially if it will be used only with manual lenses

I saw on ebay some adapters with no electronics for about $80 dollars

I own three Nikon 1 lenses -- the kit 10-30mm, the 18.5mm, and the 30-110mm.  The 10-30mm is okay, but tends to flare easily as shown below.  The 18.5mm is a nice lens, but if you aren't thrilled by a "normal" prime you aren't going to be thrilled by this one either.  I'm least impressed by the 30-110mm.  Finally, I use the V2 with a C-mount adapter and a student-grade low-powered microsoft.

I also picked up a used FT-1, but I think I spent considerably less than what they are currently selling for on FleaBay.  I'll be trying it out with a $150 55-200mm VR-II, which I bought primarily for use on an IR-converted D200.

All told, even though V1 cameras are selling for silly money these days, I'm not sure it still makes sense to put very much money into a Nikon 1 system.

No plans to invest heavily in the "system" but I have seen some very good captures from some talented photographers. I am not one of them as I am essentially just getting started. My first camera D2xs shutter failed and I never really took to it because of its size. I only had a short time with it.

I am waiting for the 18.5mm to be back in stock as it is out everywhere. I may take a chance on the 10mm or the 6.7-13. In my short tenure with a camera, I have tended to take pictures of my kids. Small, light portable and fast seem to meet the V1 attributes. As I learn, I am sure my interests will expand.

Benveniste, the 30-110 has received many good reviews so I am surprised to hear you are not impressed with that lens. I was thinking that might also be good to have as well. Perhaps a 10mm or 6.7-13 + 18.5mm + 30-110.
