The more than expected depth of field and superb resolution gives the impression of being enormous. I wonder about the eye color, most I have seen had very colorful eyes. Perhaps different species? (I can supply example on request.)

Maybe not a horsefly but just a big fly of some other type. Just a guess.
Color should be natural as it wasn't dead long enough to dry out.
