The North American Texan, also known as the AT-6, and the Harvard was built as a trainer for pilots transitioning to higher performance aeroplanes such as the North American Mustang P.51. Although large numbers of the Texan were built, and many still survive today, it was not a particularly easy or safe aeroplane to fly and it killed many pilots.
WWII pilots used to joke that if you had already safely completed 2,000 combat hours on a Mustang or a Spitfire, then you might just be sufficiently qualified to start to learn how to fly a Harvard!
