OTG (On The Go) Adapter and Software...
« on: October 29, 2016, 00:37:15 »
Any recommendations for an OTG adapter and software for an Android phone would be welcome. I'd guess an Android tablet would quite similar.

Thanks for suggestions, tips, etc.

I use an OTG adapter that lets me connect my phone directly to my camera (ca 3 Euro). Then the camera is recognized as a mass storage device and I can download the JPEGs and edit them on the phone. Simple & Nifty

I hope I understood your question correctly

I had an idea that a special app is required by the phone. I've found a two pack of Ugreen brand OTG adapters on Amazon that fit my Moto-G 3rd Gen. If I understand correctly a file manager like Astro will allow me to select and transfer files from my D800 to my phone. The phone has a 720p LCD.

OTG adapter I have is a specific type for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.
The GT2s use a proprietary plug .. not a micro USB type.

The handy part about it tho is that it has both a USB port and two card reader slots(1 microSD and 1 SD). There's a switch to choose between USB or SD usage.

Very handy (overall) as you may sometimes simply want to read data of another card of some type.

Plug the camera into the USB port(in USB mode obviously) and it comes up as a mass storage device, like Frank said.
Plug the SD card into the card reader(in SD mode) ... etc. etc!

For software, my preference has always been ES File Explorer .. although in saying that I've never tried Astro.
Only in the past few updates, they have added some, and it's looking more likely I'll go back to X-plore.

EDIT: my OTG adapter is similar to something like this one on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-3-in1-OTG-Adapter-Connector-Card-Reader-SD-Micro-SD-USB-Mobile-Phone-PC-/151555829330?hash=item23496e6e52:g:Dp4AAOSw1vlUujZ2
ps. I have no affiliations nor history with this seller .. just posting a link to what my USB/Card reader OTG device is almost similar too. Mine doesn't have the cable connection and is directly attached. Sometimes it feels a bit fragile, so maybe a cabled connection could be a safer long term proposition.

I recently bought this one that plugs into a micro-USB port, and allows a regular USB cable or device  to be plugged in. Price went up since I bought it...

My D200 shows up as a USB storage device right away if configuredd as USB device, however I have so far not been able to have it show up if configured in PTP mode. Some other cameras can only do PTP and do not work. Probably an app is needed on the Android side (my device is running 4.2.1). USB sticks works as long as they are FAT32 formatted.

I received my OTG adapters. Plugged in my D800. It was recognized quickly but nothing found the NEF files. I wouldn't expect that from Google or Android apps but I did expect to find the D800 in Astro. I used to use ES File Exporer (free version) but an upgrade really trashed it. I was considering upgrading when this happened.

I would like to perhaps copy NEF from the D800 to the micro SD card I've added to the Moto G. I did manage to develop an NEF in the D800 and save it as a JPG, Fine, Small file and upload it to the Moto G. I emailed it to a friend and myself and the phone said "Sending..." forever. I was on WiFi at my friend's house.

I'd like a file explorer that's more like Windows 7 or OS X El Capitan. I find it fairly easy to find my way around the Moto G when connected to my Windows box.

Well I've got a lot to learn. It seems like this should be really easy but I can't find my way around the Android like I can a Window or MAC HD. Any tips would still be very welcome.

Thanks!

Dave

Camera Importer and Gallery find JPG(s) on my D800 but ES and Astro file explorers don't see my D800. Is this a fault of my Motorola Moto G 3rd Generation phone?

Are iPhones more like OS X finder built in or do they cripple the user like Android?

I hope this makes sense I'm typing on the Moto G now.

Thanks!

RawDroid is one app that can assist with viewing/editing NEFs on Android.

Obviously the issue is that the NEF codec is not natively supported on Android(or any other OS that I know of).
So you need to find a codec for NEF files or alternatively use a program that has native support for those types of raw files(which RawDroid does).

Android has native raw file support for it's own DNG raw file format ... don't know if it fully supports other camera DNG raw files tho.

And I just had a quick search for NEF file compatibility in the Play store and found: NEF thumbnailer(free version is limited), Raw Vision, Raw Decoder, among a few others available.

Haven't tried any of them other than RawDroid a few years ago on my D800E files. Not for editing tho .. just browsing/sorting/moving purposes.

I suppose if you want to be able to edit the actual NEF files, you may need something like Ps or Lr for Android.

I tried using a newer Lexar card reader. My Android Moto G (3rd Gen) finds and reads this card reader. It's a USB-3.0 Dual-Slot Reader Model: LRW400U, Rev A. It finds this newer card reader where the Moto G doesn't find either my D800 as a data source other than finding JPG file or an older USB-2 Lexar card reader. Buying a second Lexar USB-3.0 Dual-Slot Reader will suffice or fill my needs. It's easier to use the card reader to move JPG files than plug in the cable to the D800 with the RRS L-plate in place.
