This was taken earlier this summer on Yonge Street in front of the Toronto Eaton Center Mall, here in downtown Toronto.
The subject is an elderly woman I often see in this area of about two square city blocks.
Always dressed the same, summer and winter: long coat, headscarf all in black, and pushing a wheeled walker full of plastic bags and soft drink bottles, she is physically disabled and shuffles along with great difficulty, stopping every few steps to ward off imaginary demons with waves of her hand. I've approached her on a couple of occasions only to be similarly waved away.
On this particular day, she was coming toward me on the shaded sidewalk, which gave the area a dark brooding feel, and her contorted posture, clothing and expression completed a picture of gloom and suffering.
Converted to black and white in Photoshop.
