Sensor pixel errors .. help
« on: November 28, 2016, 18:11:09 »
Are dead/hot pixels considered difficult to avoid?  I've located 5-6 pixel errors and plus what seems to be an array of dead pixels.

I do like to shoot long exposure at night and also in dim light indoors so they will probably haunt me. Maybe a remapping will be able to fix it(?)

Here are two areas with pixel errors (100% from RAW). Long exposure NR off. They can be reproduced both with lens cap on and long exposure handheld shot on dark subject.

Hot or stuck pixels will grow in numbers over time. If the camera has a 'Long Term Noise Reduction' feature, perhaps it should be switched ON ?

RAW converters differ in their ability to mask the flaws. Some have an explicit setting.

Thanks Bjørn,

the camera is (looks) almost new and I still have the option of returning it or maybe get it fixed on warranty (remapping pixels). Had it been an older camera I might accept it.

My idea is to get it fixed (if remapping is considered a good solution) or simply return it and look for a better copy.

I ran same test on my 3 year old X-E1 with the previous gen sensor and I found no pixel errors.

I will check the things you suggest.

Remapping is a no-brainer when the number of flawed pixel is moderate, say a few hundred. When they get into the thousands or higher, perhaps rendition of details can be adversely impacted.

Try a search for remapping of dead or stuck pixels. There may be a menu option or a secret hand shake for your camera. For the Nikon D800 I read one can initiate sensor cleaning twice in quick succession to map out pixels.

Thanks Bjørn and David,

I've checked my Capture One Pro and it does have a feature to locate and suppress such pixels, however it seems that I have to apply a quite high value (> 80) that potentially impacts image qualite (according to Capture One documentation). Also, the areas that looks more like clusters of pixels wasn't immediately possible to suppress.

Setting NR off in Capture One Pro seems to suppress to some extent but not on a complete dark background.

Haven't found anything indicating the X-T1 has a built in feature to deal with this.
