First Frost
« on: October 26, 2016, 00:38:58 »
Nikon D810, Zeiss Otus 28mm APO f/1.4

I know, this image is pretty dark, but it was pretty dark out there, with the early sun finding its way in. And it was the first frost. I thought I would just show it as I saw it, and just put up with the complaints. I could have lightened it, but then it would not have communicated the impression it did.

I like it.  Very satisfying composition and processing.  I admit that were the raw file on my computer, I'd probably turn the knob to lighten the shadows....at least to see what the effect would be.

I don't think this is too dark. Even though we do have access to a lot of shadow detail, we don't always have to show it.
The impression of the image to me is one of warmth, and so the title doesn't quite fit, even though I'm sure it must have been a cold morning.

I also like it as it is.  The shadow darkness is essential aspect of the rendition of the atmosphere conveyed through the image, although I agree that it is worth trying to lighten up a bit during the process.

I like the darkness too.
I think it creates a mood befitting of the scene!

Very nice moody vantage point, the subdued mild warm morning light gives a very special feeling over the graveyard, I agree that the representation is very true to what and how the scene appeared.

To brighten it up, open up the middle and tones is tempting and very popular especially since we now have these amazing cameras where this is possible almost with out any sacrifice in image quality. However if one does this the whole scene becomes something that is artificially created something nature does not do by itself.

As I see this, also after seeing the recent postings by you Michael, this is Nature Documentary Images.

For this image I would have waited a couple of minutes longer and hoped for the light to fall onto the leaves on the ground even more than it already does in the image, that would have lifted the middle tones of the whole image.

A good picture Michael!
Apart from the autumnal serenity I like how the gravestones form lineations of varying dips, thus emphasizing the depth of the scene.

I agree Sten on this feeling of depth.

BTW a challenge; How many flags are in the image,,, no cheating by adjusting the light, not until you have made your count,,,

Excellent mood. Last frost...

The predominant darker tones being intentional and an important part of the image, the composition, the mood, the symbolism...

I agree it works on so many levels that it may take different post-productions with grace. I will like to play with it and wouldn't  change a thing, both at the same time :)
