Rafflesia
« on: October 20, 2016, 16:55:28 »
In the Indonesian rainforest we found one in bloom.
It can be be over 100 centimeters in diameter, and weigh up to 10 kilograms, this one is about 60cm.
The flowers look and smell like rotting flesh to attract flies, which transport pollen from male to female flowers.

It stinks hard!  (This phrase would work as compliment only for the images of Rafflesia and Amorphophallus titanum.   :o :o :o)

oh I like the carnivores plants - they are fascinating and often very beautiful - like this one. Park you ass next to one - and wait for those bugs to arrive. Botany and insectology :)

Rafflesia is not a carnivorous plant. However, it certainly knows how to attract its pollinators (small flies etc.) by the smell and those oddly coloured flowers. Each flower opens at night and as far as I recall won't last for long.

It blooms only for a week or so.
The next is a young plant and a close-up of a blooming one.

Never seen this flower in these earlier phases.  Thanks for the additional images!
