Some hip hop, for a change
« on: March 21, 2016, 00:10:51 »
Not my favourite, but the performer (Rilès) had an outdoors videoshoot and I took the opportunity to add some stills. Df + 105/2.5 in the 2.8-4.0 range. Heavy-handed PP (not my style either, but "Spaß muss sein", as Goethe probably would have said).

... and the final three (from a selection made by the videographer)

In all three batches, I would choose the first ones.  To me, the pose of the dancer and the shape of the splash (?) of the powder are essential.

Appreciate your reflex nerve.   8)

That said, the idea of using the powder may not work well.  I would think that the water filled in a huge shallow tray would be more effective.

The three batches are an arbitrary grouping of shots, in chronological order (over 20' maybe). These have been hand-picked by the videographer according to his taste. He's a guy in his twenties, so probably more aware of the expected results than I am. But somehow, it is all about the pose, the splash, and possibly the facial expression that is hard to keep under control. For all those reasons, I kept only about 50 shots out of 250, and the above are the nine remaining.

The sure way to nail proper shots here was to shoot at high rate (5.5 images/s). The limitation was not so much speed than buffer capacity - now I understand why some people need more.

The powder was legal: wheat flour. Liquids would be interesting, but not sure Df would like them, and the 105/2.5 even less... but okay, I'll forward your tip ;)

"If" the videographer or the dancer had such abundance of "illegal" powder, they wouldn't mind buying you a longer fast lens (like the VR 200/2.0) for the water splash session.  :D

Joke aside, you should need a longer lens for the water splash session.  That's for sure.

There is a couple on nice ones! ;)

But I can't help thinking the performer needs to work on his facial expressions ;)

To me they look very flat, dark on dark and very rough, is that on purpose?

Akira, this would indeed be the case for the 300/2.8. The 300/4 PF would not yield enough subject isolation. Dark bricks with white joints are difficult to get rid of. The colour version has better "contrast", but is less suitable for the subject.

For the present session, the shots at f/2.8 work better, given the "presence" of the background. I sometimes chose f/4, because I was overly anxious about the sharpness of the face, given that the subject was moving a lot (the 105/2.5 is sharp enough per se, at least on Df, at all apertures). Well, subject isolation is more important than sharpness here.

Erik, you have a point. The roughness is intentional, although a bit excessive, as a result of significant cropping. Maybe the film emulation (HP5+) was not the best choice.
I have tried to increase the contrast between subject and background using various filters in PP, to no avail. The Zeiss 135/2 wide open would have done a better job here.
Concerning facial expressions, see my above remark - it is one of the reasons for culling. Such expressions are OK in videos because they are transient; once frozen, they would not always "work". #4 and #8 are interesting here, the rest is just acceptable (and when there's a foot in front line #9, they are even better).

Indeed you would need a longer and faster lens, if the separation is essential.

As for the facial expression, the dancer apparently (or even obviously) is trying avoid breathing the powder.  That concern would limit his artistic expression, which was another reason for my suggestion of using water.
