This pair was imaged in Northern Michigan. From birth until about 2 weeks of age, the chicks spend a significant amount of time on the parents back to stay warm and protect themselves from predation (snapping turtles and pike mainly). This chick is about done with the free rides! The adults can adjust their buoyancy to ride at different heights, which makes it easier for them to feed the chicks, and let them climb onto the bus.

The orange color comes from a boat house in the background.
Advice and comments always appreciated.
