the red mitten
« on: January 07, 2016, 23:49:02 »
This was taken in downtown Toronto a few years ago.
What attracted me was the man's outstretched arm and red mitten, seemingly reaching out for help.

I have been in the picture for a long time. Then some more trying to figure out how to comment with no success. Many parts: lonely man, sleeping in the street, cold, superb contrast between colors -in the man- and the all grey surroundings, the beggars hand even when out, the strange -again- choice for the crop, leaving a little bit of the car wheels for us to see, the relationship with the cold floor and what I think is warn air coming out of the ventilation from underground, the lines in the floor leading to him and all the rest leading away from him -not even touching or intersecting whatsoever-
There is every kind of visual isolation I can think of and, once again, you manage to make a connection with the emotion of the viewr -me-

  Thanks for sharing

Dropping the camera height makes this image. Does the vent generate/dispurse heat?

When looking at your image I saw many different stories /scenarios.
Open for interpretation.
Well seen!

Thanks all for the comments.
Yes, that is a heat grate that he is sleeping on.
Typically they are prime bits of real estate for homeless folk here in Toronto where the winters are bitterly cold.
There is however, an unfortunate downside to their use that I learned about from some of the street people I spent a lot of time with. Often when drunk individuals fall asleep on the grates, they may be too intoxicated to feel the heat, and are badly scalded (sometimes to death) by the hot, moist air coming out of them.
Gary,
As for the point of view, I deliberately got down low to his level to make the shot more intimate.
Golunvolo,
Yup. Film.
Is there anything else?
I do remember reading 20 years ago about some new system for capturing pictures. Digi...something or other.
Is it still around?
