D750 - user tips
« on: November 30, 2015, 19:53:22 »
As I have a big job ahead of me (16 stage shows over two weekends) I went ahead and bought a lightly used D750.
Instead of reading the manual I want to learn from the users out there.
So tell me, any handy set-up tips?

Take at least two bodies and several spare batteries. You might not need them but backup is a very good idea.

And Good luck!

I reassign ISO to the video button. I can switch from fixed to auto ISO without leaving the viewfinder.

And I also assign exposure comp to the rear dial.

Thanks guys!
I usually shoot manually after having established the best Shutter speed/Aperture combination, but will attempt the auto ISO variant.
I will shoot during the dress rehearsals with fully set lighting as well so will have the opportunity to test out different combinations.
My gear will be the D750 and Df with Tamron 24-70/2.8VC and probably a Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VR.
I might bring the D3200 for video as well. This is just for my own use as there will be a fully professional video recording.

Helps to add the auto-iso settings page to "My Menu", as it is a bit buried otherwise.

The highlight metering is fantastic during bright days when you want to keep the sky's detail without having to go HDR.  Amazing how much DR it has when using this metering mode.

My 2¢:

Set the video button to ISO.
Set one of the front buttons to the auto ISO menu.

Get used to the need for more button/dial combos than the bigger models.

I usually shoot concerts with spot metering and AF point on the faces.
Experiment with the highlight protected spot metering. I am still not sure whether it works well or not.

Since the D750 I shoot manual with auto ISO.
For concerts typically ISO 1600 - ISO 6400 (ISO 12K only in seriously bad light).
Shutter speed 1/200-1/250, unless the band is really frozen or very active.

Since the D750 the need to fix WB to tungsten for concerts has diminished in my eyes. Auto WB works quite nicely (if you want color).

Get a portrait grip (third party works just fine).
That gives you a second battery which is always online. Though I have yet to need a second battery for a concert even though I did reach more than 1K shots.
And it gives you a better grip for portraits in my eyes, let alone a better grip for large hands.

I run my D750 with 2 64G cards, the second working as a backup. Gives you more than 1000 shots in 14bit compressed.

Depending on the type of access you have and the views you want to capture, you might want to try life view with a 45° tilted screen and then shoot over the head of the crowds. Not a hight keeper rate, but a different perspective. I am usually tall enough to shoot over the crowds without that ;-), but even for me the higher vantage point is sometimes useful.

cheers

Set up one of the User modes for Manual but with auto-ISO enabled. This way you can choose the lowest shutter speed to give you blur-free images, and end up with the lowest possible ISO.

I like highlight-protected metering for stage lighting, but it is very conservative and I tend to dial in +2 stops compensation.

ISO in the video button is very helpful
AF in the af button only for me
Spot metering
Auto ISO haven´t work for me yet but it does for some people, same with highlight metering, I´m just not happy with the results.
I´m using two 32 gb 90mb/s sandisk cards and they do work very well.
Grip for extra battery in place -haven´t need it yet- and portrait oriented buttons.
Use to set the d700 at +- 4500k for white balance but I´m letting this one in auto for now. Will see...
Have fun!
