That's actually Foster City https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foster_City,_California in the foreground, about 20 km south of San Francisco.  The larger area is known locally as "The Peninsula" because it lies between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  You were on the standard approach to the airport under typical wind conditions.

Jan, thank you.

Bill, I would have to say it felt like a normal approach and landing.  I do know South San Francisco is a defined area.  Perhaps I should have called it South of San Francisco.

Oh wow! I like how the water "passes through" the image.

Ron, I've been remiss in not complimenting you on your fine photo!  I really like the effect.

Meanwhile, South San Francisco proper is a city that's always  been on the ugly side.  Here's how most visitors to San Francisco International (SFO) first become aware of it:http://sfcitizen.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/GO8F9261-copy.jpg. SFO is actually located in San Bruno but that city doesn't have a huge sign to announce its presence. A number of decades ago, my grandparents landed at SFO for the first time and asked my parents in a surprised voice if this was what San Francisco looks like!
