TAMRON engineers talk about 35/1.8 and 45/1.8
« on: September 18, 2015, 19:12:54 »
The Japanese Impress Digital Camera Watch published an interview to Tamron engineers who talks mainly about their new prime lenses:

http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/review/tamronsp/20150918_721493.html

The sample images can be enlarged to the original sizes by clicking them.  The camera is not mentioned, but the image size suggests that it was either D800/8000E or D810.  The texts are only in Japanese.  Here are some interesting points:

1.  They decided on the speed of f1.8, because an f1.4 lens with the vibration reduction would be too big, but they want the lens faster than f2.0.

2.  They wanted the lenses to be able to get closer than the conventional lenses of this class.

3.  The equivalent effect of vibration reduction is 3 stops on 35mm and 3.5 stops on 45mm respectively, which appears to be inferior to the 4-4.5 stops of Nikon VR lenses.  They chose the better optical performance over the more effective vibration reduction.

4.  In order to enable the lenses to get closer, they incorporated the floating element method.  The challenge was that the major part of the optical system including the vibration reduction elements has to be traveled to focus, which makes the mechanism as complicated as those of zoom lenses.

5.  They are planning to expand the f1.8 vibration reduction prime lineup.

Hope this would be of any help.

Thank you Akira for the translation, lots of interesting new information.

Here's a review of the 45/1.8VC on SLRgear.com

You are welcome, Jan!

The measurement by SLRgear looks pretty impressive.

The engineers also said that they are looking for chances to develop SP series lenses for mirrorless cameras, too.

Had the chance to briefly test the Tammy 35/1.8VC today. Before I can investigate the results of the shots (shot in parallell with the Nikkor 35/1.8 FX) it left a very good impression with me. Good build quality, weather sealed, AF speed as expected (on par with the Nikkor) and IQ seemingly at least as good as the Nikkor. Its close focusing distance is a really nice feature.
Will have a look at the pics tonight and post results.

Here are a few shots trying to show the differences (or lack thereof) in the defocused areas.
The first LoCA one is a heavy crop from the originals. The two lenses behave remarkably similart.
The OOF blur circles show the Tamron so "suffer" from the so called onion ring effect (due to two molded aspherical lens elements).
Shot from the same distance, the last picture shows the increased blur circles size achievable with the Tamron's 0.2m near focus limit.

The 45 could be a very good match for the Df. Its optical performance seems to be intermediate between the 50/1.8AFS and the Sigma A 50/1.4. In France at least, the price of the Tamron 45/1.8 will be about the same as the Sigma A !!! (800€). But the close focus ability and VR, plus the very low aberrations (coma included) at wide apertures seem to make it a first choice lens for dark places (yeah, my churches and organs...).

Sten, thanks for your real-world test images.  Both lenses look very promising, and 35/1.8 appears to be superior to AF-S Nikkor 35/1.8 ED with which i was not overly impressed with on D7000.
