AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80 f2.8-40E ED VR review
« on: September 10, 2015, 11:12:36 »
Japanese Impress Digital Camera Watch just posted a review of the new DX 16-80/2.8-4.0 VR zoom mounted on D7200.

The texts are all in Japanese.  Right below the lens porn, you can examine the image quality of the widest end (central, peripheral) and the longest end (central, peripheral) in this order.  You will read the f-numbers.

Below that, there are some sample images.  The reviewer tests its ghost/flare characteristics, too, both at the widest end (with the sun in the frame and with the sun right behind the edge) and at the longest end (same as the widest end).

The impression of my rough and quick test of the lens on my D7000 at the Nikon service was very positive, on condition that the quality is properly controled.

Hope this would be of any help.

Not stupid Akira, only forgetting which is highly human and happens to all.

The test samples at various apertures indicate the sample lens suffers from decentering and thus needs quite a lot of stopping down.

Bjørn, that's my biggest frustration I have about recent Nikon products...  I didn't observe any manufacturing problem in the sample I tried (I'm sicklily sensitive to the decentering after my unfortunate experiences with Nikon lenses bought new).

Hardly premium performance is it? Usually early samples are as good as possible to help with reviews and later ones get shoddy.

We are talking about mass production items, not hand-made showcases here. I rarely encounter a defective sample right out of the box, but it *does* happen. it is quite hard to make an estimate of the likelihood of getting a problem lens, because the input data is highly skewed. People make a lot of fuss about problem lenses, whilst happy owners don't contribute. The ratio of these groups may be 50:1 or 100:1 or even higher in favour of good products, but we cannot give valid estimates. My gut feeling is that we are looking at 100:1 or better, but that is only based on my own samples received for tests and reviews. The last lens I encountered with obvious decentering was a 70-200 f/4 Nikkor and the decentering was quite mild and only causing some trouble for distant scenes at the long end of its focal range, so might have passed unnoticed by many users. From this I cannot at all conclude the 70-200/4 is a flawed lens, only that my single sample had an issue.

As of this writing, the links the sample images of varying aperture settings in original sizes don't work.  So I cannot make suer of your comment.  The other sample images look fine.

Bjørn, I would have to say that I have been unfortunate with the Nikon lenses purchased new more often than fortunate, although I'm not trying to generalize my experiences.
