Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS over the Ansel Adams Wilderness
« on: November 04, 2024, 18:16:27 »
I spent the first few weeks of October backpacking with friends in Yosemite and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. On one of the last nights, I was photographing our camp at night at a stunning high lake. It was very light -- the sun had just set and the 3/4 moon was high up and shining brightly. I showed one of my friends an image I had just taken and said, "Look at the cool meteor I got." He looked at the image, then up at the sky and said, "COMET!" We hadn't been able to see it up to that point because the sky was so light. I ran down to the lake but just wish we had been able to see the comet about 10 minutes earlier. Nikon D850, Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-4.5.

Amazing landscape!  As Nasos noted, the comet gives a virtually infinite sense of space.  The  reflection of the comet on the water is an extra bonus.

What a wonderful reward for your days of hiking Gil.

I can see at least 3 pale lines in the sky too.
Are these likely to be aircraft or actually meteors?

(Please excuse the PP to accentuate the lines)

Wow, really nice and long tail in such a beautiful setting. I think I even see signs of the anti-tail.

I've been wondering what that "anti-tail" was called! At first I thought it was some weird artefact of software.

And as far as those pale lines, I'm not sure. There are a LOT of aircraft crossing that airspace, which is kind of sad.

It is more likely satellites, it is getting so crowded and almost impossible to avoid - many of them are the Starlink ones. Aircrafts typically will cause an interrupted line.

Especially when you look at the reflection off the lake - the positioning of the comet, the mountains and the lake looks very good to me.

I wonder if an earler shot would have worked quite so well?

Outstanding!  It's also good to see a familiar landscape again.
