This spring, I met up with Eugene Tapahe in Jackson, Wyoming, for a trip into the Tetons and Yellowstone, mainly to see bison calves and bear cubs born over the winter. We saw a lot of them, but perhaps the most interesting encounter was along the road south of Old Faithful. We were driving north very early in the morning and saw this wolf across a meadow on our right. We pulled over, and as soon as we did, the wolf started across the meadow toward us. Eugene was driving and his camera was in the back seat, so he got out and retrieved his gear just as the wolf stepped out into the road perhaps 60 feet away. Eugene was taking photos out the window, and I was trying to get a photo of Eugene taking a photo and completely forgot to snap a close-up of the wolf from that angle myself! It walked around us in the road and seemed to be deciding which of us it would eat first. I suggested Eugene, because he was closer and more tasty. Eventually the wolf went back into the meadow and continued north. We continued along and saw it once more before it faded into the forest. This image is a highly cropped version of the original.
