Question and help appreciated
« on: June 13, 2023, 17:15:28 »
My local camera dealer has a customer with an optical issue, orange/green artifacts when shooting into the sun closed down to f/22 (see attached image).
I believe this could be caused by reflections of the LP filter/sensor or is it a lens issue? Anyone experienced the same or have knowledge of some other root cause of the issue?

Could it be a filter in front of the lens?

This wouldn't be the AFS 14-24/2.8 by any chance? That lens is known to exhibit such patterns.

I presume, until more info arrives, that it's the Bayer filter pattern reflected, distorted, magnified and returned to the sensor. I've never gotten THAT pattern from a 14-24G, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Thanks guys! I believe the lens used is the 14-30/4 Z.

Well after 2 weeks without any clouds, they came today. I did try with very slight coverage, but I don't see any problems.
I did try with both the wide end and the long end, and with different apertures.
Z6 14-30 f4.

I have seen similar patterns with several lenses in situations where the sun is focused on a obviously very bright spot on the sensor. As I have seen now and the sort of a Bayer RGGB pattern, I am convinced that this is a greatly magnified, and usually  poorly focused, image of the bright spot reflected back onto the sensor by the residual reflections on some lens surface. I specifically remember an image with the AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 lens.

Here is one: 18-35 at 29mm f/16 on D800  left third of image, upper 2 thirds. contrast processed to enhance visibility of effect. (Yes, there is dirt on the sensor)

Good catch, Birna! I forgot about that.
