Fairbanks end of year firework 2021
« on: January 02, 2022, 07:28:26 »

All of these were captured from my standard vantage point the later years about 3 km away from the launch site at the university, using the 300mm f/4 PF at f/16 on D500 at ISO 100, exposure bulb setting so that I could adapt each image to the "rhythm" and intensity of the firework. The standard timing is from 20:00 in the evening instead of midnight to be children friendly. This year I was all alone at this location as this site was all snowed over after our ice storm so parking would have been impossible. Usually there are a few people gathering there.

Images from the finale usually get rather chaotic. Let this image represent the year that has gone by.

And let us hope for a better new one.

A little post-script - a view from the panorama cameras at the top of the Geophysics building that carries the antenna dish in the images above (International Arctic Research Center to the right)- one of the automatically stored images at 10 min intervals caught one of the launches. This is where everyone else gathered to view the event.

Great series, Øivind

I like especially 6.  The time lapse effects work great there and  the fireworks contrasts great against the trees

Thanks John. This year was special in that it appeared to be more windy than usual, so the sparks from the trails and otherwise were moving into wider patterns. It inspired me to make shorter exposures than usual, with less objects in each frame. However there were some intervals that allowed longer exposures without over-crowding the frame. That particular frame grew on me after I got it edited and cropped.

Lovely images and thanks for a peak into another dimension where winter actually exists, we are supposed to have winter here as well but its 13C above zero, windy and wet so more like autumn haha.

Best wishes to all!!
Cheers,
Jan Anne

Thanks for the enthusiastic comments all of you. It is always a joy to come back from these events and view the images on the computer monitor as the details goes un-noticed during quick previews under ways for occasional adjustments of framing. Nice and clear and back to -38°C at the airport today (but with strong inversion so considerably warmer at my cabin) and 40 below in sight for this week - perhaps more winter than you ask for Jan Anne.  ;D
