It's good to be square......
« on: June 14, 2015, 10:42:24 »
I'm not someone who particularly favours the square(squarish ;)) format but I think this works,
ok it may not have perfect symmetry, some distortion from my 24-70afs doesn't help, but I hope you get the idea,
obviously I'm not suggesting it's an original idea!  :)

I think it works for this scene(the way you've cropped it at least).

I think the square format works well here because of the way you have composed the frame. The angle of the floor- and roofboards helps, and of course the pillar on the left is vital for the composition to work.
For many years I used a Hasselblad 501, and after a while i fell in love with the square format. It is a more demanding format than rectangular, photos can easily be static and boring, but when it works the results can be great.
I suddenly got an urge to find my old 6x6 negatives and scan some of them.

Like you, I am not a fan of square - or any other crop than 35mm.
Partly I think its because 35 is familiar territory to us.
Also - shooting for a client means it will print right - start diong other crops and printing can go for a loop.
Personally I think I am "scared" of other crops which means I limit myself - so thank you for sharing this square - :)
(which works nicely by the way)
