Alexander Livingston is known as the Father of The Tomato.  In America in the 1880's, he revolutionized the tomato industry by creating several kinds of new tomato as well as commercializing the seed process.

The City Parks and Recreation department has an annual event where people can come and tour the house as well as experience what life was like in America at that time in Ohio in 1880's.

Some great insights here Andrew of how life was some 130 to 140 years ago.  Food production and its preparation was especially hard work back then.
