Fortunately, it's possible to decouple the mechanism that closes down the aperture as the magnification increases. This avoids the problem of being stuck with f/32 nominal at 1:1 and the quality loss that the small opening entails. In order to be able to set aperture in this case, the lens has to be CPU-modified ('chipped') with the CPU in G mode. One can still use the ring flash feature.
I have a Medical 120 modified in this manner and I believe there are a couple others floating around as I have delivered CPUs for several projects. Erik [Lund] might have one too.
