Lotus with Ultra Micro Nikkor 165mm
« on: September 12, 2018, 19:40:50 »
I finally took my UMN out for a field day, as I have never really seriously tried to see how it renders. I am pleasantly surprised by not only the obvious sharpness and contrast, but by what turns out to be a very nice bokeh as well. It is true that I have done a bit of sharpening at both a fine and medium radius (not too much, actually) and added a bit of microcontrast, but basically this is what I got. There is a certain cleanliness and precision to the rendering that I just have not seen with any other lens, even very good modern ones.

Very impressive rendering Toby
Which body did you use, and how did you mount the lens?

Hi Wolfgang,
This is mounted on a Sony A7R2. When I got the lens originally I wrote to Michio Akiyama, and it turned out that he had had made 10 custom adapters for UMN 165s with a Nikon F mount and thankfully he sold me one. I have a macrofocusing Nikon F to E mount adapter that provides the focusing capability with some manual E mount extension tubes for a workable flange distance.

wonderfully clear and detailed with superb color fidelity. Did you have a wind still time?

Yes, mostly. I especially like the bokeh, which has some character without being too harsh.
