Is Multi-CAM 20K of all-cross type?
« on: June 14, 2018, 05:09:18 »
Nikonrumors has just posted an article regarding Nikon's promise of a firmware update:

https://nikonrumors.com/2018/06/13/the-firmware-update-for-the-cross-type-sensors-at-the-outer-areas-of-the-frame-is-still-not-released-for-nikon-d5-d850-and-d500.aspx/

According to the article, the up-and-coming update should activate the cross-type function of the outer area of the AF sensor, which means that the Multi-CAM 20K AF sensor used in D5, D850 and D500 are originally designed and made as that of all-cross-type!

No, this is just about the use of outer area sensors as cross type on the 180-400/4 lens. Details about which sensors are cross type are shown e.g. on p. 99 of the D5 manual and the recent addendum.

Thank you, Ilkka, for the clarification!  I think I was too optimistic!   ::)
