I was walking around that area with my travel buddy just to show him how Bangkok got its reputation.
Sukhumvit has enormous traffic flow and the overhead platforms of the Skytrain seem to hold the sound in.
The open-front bars compete with loud music.
Even late at night the sidewalks are jammed with booths selling any kind of stuff one can imagine.
So it's crowded, hot, noisy and the sights just overwhelm.
This almost invisible passage is what is left to get by.
And any kind of eye contact with a loitering person, even for a second will elicit, a smile and an inquiry about 'where are you going?.
For someone from more uptight environs, the street life in Bangkok is an adrenaline-raiser on its own - night or day.
As my son said on his blog, 'In Bangkok, don't be surprised if that tall, lovely woman who is giving you an inviting eye from the end of the bar, didn't start out life as a female.'
