This lens has been rumored for a while. It should be a useful upgrade to the current AFS 70-300VR if the DX version is anything to go by. Interesting the new lens is AF-P - the first time it is used on an FX lens.

What is needed next is something like a companion AF-P 24-70/3.5-4.5 VR (with same filter size). It would be modern version of the older AF-D 28-70/3.5-4.5 or an FX version of the DX 18-55 kit zooms. The FX lineup really could do with a more compact standard zoom.

I strongly hope that the lens offers the VR sports mode in addition to the normal mode.  I don't like the behavior of the normal VR where the frame jumps back to the centered position whenever I release the shutter...

The VC normal mode of Tamron sibling works like the VR sprots mode, which I prefer, even if Nikon insists that VR normal mode is more efficient than the sports mode.

The pictures show a three-way AM-MA-A switch, which is usually found only on big super-telephotos. The AFS 70-300VR, 70-200/4 and shorter VR lenses have the simpler MA-A switch instead. That might suggest the VR controls are also more sophisticated.

The current model offers the normal/active select switch (sorry, not the sports but the active mode).  So, it would be safe to assume that the function would be taken over by the new model.

You might try the AF-ON button only focus method. Just hold the AF-ON button and VR will stay active until the button is released. The AF-C focus mode is used.

Dave, thanks for the advice.  I'm not sure that can prevent the frame from jumping to the center when the camera is released, but I'll try that whenever I have a chance to try any AF-VR Nikkor.

Ok NR proved correct :-) Here's official announcement, and there's already a dedicated HG thread

So with many older cameras if the camera is on tripod and you set up your shot and focus, if the camera goes in the standby mode, the lens loses focus? This seems an odd technical limitation, I wonder why they are not able to overcome it. If there will be more AF-P lenses in the future, IMO they should address this. There is already enough chaos regarding compatibility.

Yes, new 24-70VR will be great, but, so far, there is a real panic on the market  - new AF-P system is not fully compatible with some, even newest, bodies. That's a usual Nikon politics towards us, customers - we are ignored. Nikon MUST made certain updates to existed cameras on the first place, before introduction of the new AF, but they did not. Words escape me... Yeah, as usual... LZ

It's not yet clear what the compatibility situation is as Nikon Japan and USA sites have different and apparently contradictory information.

So situation is even worse - the different branches of the same manufacturer are not able to connect each other in the era of internet! That is above and way beyond my imagination!  LZ

Now this error on the Nikon USA pages has been corrected.

Nikon needs to higher Maxwell Smart and his partner 99!
